A Vailean is a member of an alien species from the planet Vaile. The species is characterized by their distinctive physical and cultural traits, particularly their frank communication style and assertive nature.

Physical Characteristics

edit

Vaileans are notably tall in stature, with females typically standing several inches taller than average humans. Hera, a Vailean cadet aboard Galactica, towers over both Athena and Cassiopeia, standing two inches taller than Starbuck.[1][2]

When angry, Vaileans exhibit a distinctive physical trait: their eyes take on a violet tinge.[2]

Cultural Traits

edit

Communication Style

edit

Vaileans are known for their remarkable frankness in communication. This directness can sometimes surprise even close companions, as Cassiopeia experiences when interacting with Hera.[3] The species' tendency toward direct speech appears to be an ingrained cultural characteristic.

Independence and Assertiveness

edit

Vailean culture emphasizes independence and assertiveness, particularly among females. This manifests in their willingness to speak their minds openly and take initiative in personal relationships. Hera demonstrates this trait when she propositions Starbuck, announcing "rather abruptly" that she wished to be his woman—a direct approach that conflicts with human courtship customs aboard Galactica.[4]

Cultural Values

edit

On Vaile, romantic propositions and relationships are handled with less formality than in human society. As Hera explains, "on Vaile we don't make much of such things," indicating a more casual approach to romantic relationships.[5]

Behavioral Characteristics

edit

Vaileans demonstrate a strong tendency to act first and think later, as Hera acknowledges about herself: "I'm such a... such a Vailean! Always acting first and thinking later."[6] This impulsive nature appears to be recognized as a species characteristic.

Despite their assertive nature, Vaileans are described as rarely turning back from a goal once they have set their mind to something, demonstrating persistence and determination in their pursuits.[7]
