Additional Information

The Valkyrie type battlestar was a class of light battlestar in the Colonial Fleet at the time of the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. It appears to have been the work horse of the battlestar fleet, existing in large numbers.

During the Cylon assault on the Twelve Colonies, several battlestars of the class attempt to engage the Cylons over Caprica, only to be disabled by the CNP's backdoors. They are destroyed shortly after[4] (TRS: "The Plan").

At least two unnamed battlestars of the class are docked at the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards when it is destroyed (TRS: "Razor").

Design[edit]

This class was possibly the smallest class of battlestar to be used by the Colonial Fleet. Measuring around 700 meters long, it was about the length of the Flight pod on a Galactica type battlestar.

It featured four large sub-light engines, a number of smaller manoeuvring thrusters littered around the ship. In addition to this, it is presumed to have featured an FTL drive.

Physically it was far more "jagged" then other battlestar classes, with numerous sharp edges offset by numerous curved lines. The hull was covered with guns, missile launchers and sensors, giving it a sharp and streamlined but functional look. The class was far more compact then most others, with the pods closer to the main hull and the head being only a couple meters wider then the main hull. The underside of the ship showed much of the internal structures, and lacked significant weaponry, indicating that it was not designed to be exposed to fire in a battle.

Flight pods were single layered, each consisting of 3 Viper launch tubes located in a rectangular section underneath the pod. The tubes ran parallel to the flight deck and pointing forwards. The launch tubes presumably operated in a different way to those on larger ships to allow a higher launch rate and may suggest a more offensively oriented approach to Viper launches. The tubes were also significantly longer. The Valkyrie type appeared to lack the Raptor pads seen on the Mercury Class, however, there were sections on either side near the tip of the head that may have served this purpose.

Weaponry[edit]

The Valkyrie type has more weapons per square meter then any other class. Equipped with 20 small turrets, and 33 heavier (though much smaller then on other classes) ones, it has a huge number of guns. Presumably, there are an unknown number of point defense guns that would be located between the armor plating, much like the Mercury-class. This class mostly relies on missiles weapons than other classes, with the large turrets capable of firing small anti-fighter missiles, and with at least 6 silos containing ship to ship missiles.

Size and disposition of a typical Valkyrie-type's airwings is never stated, however in "The Plan" Valkyrie has at least 20 Vipers nearby. Yet, this is not evidence that this represents the full airwing.

Capabilities[edit]

Although a small hull (at least when compared to ships like the Mercury Class or Galactica type) these ships were heavily used. It may have served in a role similar to frigates in modern navies as they are shown being used for a number of roles including patrols, covert operations and even planetary protection. The small size, mass production, and apparent range of abilities presumably meant that it was perfect for a peace time fleet, as they would be cheep, and would have a number of uses. It may have lacked the ability to produce Vipers unlike it's larger cousins.

Notes[edit]

  • In "Razor," a few Valkyrie-types can be seen at the Scoprion Fleet Shipyards with what would appear to be a roll bar above the engine section. This feature is not present during the Cylon attack on the shipyards, leading to speculation that the ships seen with the roll bar were in fact different to those seen without it.
  • The Science of Battlestar Galactica names two Battestars as being at the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards during the attack. These ships, Bellerophon and Remses, are thus likely examples of this class.
