A nightflyer is likely a type of owl on Equellus.

When Red-Eye asks Vella and Puppis about the "strange sound" heard by Lacerta in town, Puppis claimed that he heard a "nightflyer hoot down by the woods" ^{(TOS: "The Lost Warrior")}.
