Just a few concluding remarks I don't blame you for what you did, where I in your position I would have done the same thing. The reason I didn't respond to Serenity's first post was because until yesterday I had been unable to figure out how. As far as fear of retribution, I've never really been involved with a wiki before so I wasn't really sure what to expect and was kind of intimidated. I appreciate you're addressing my issues. Not only did it help me understand why things were happening the way they were, but it also made me feel like my input was welcome and that was all I was asking for. I am anxious to see any clarification you can offer in the weeks ahead because I find this a rather fascinating topic.
Thanks again for the clarification. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Grandmaester314 (talk • contribs).

Dynamic Page List
Hi, I just checked all feature about BW and I didn't see the Dynamic Page List feature. Do you plan one day to install it because it's very useful?--LIMAFOX76 20:32, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
- Perhaps. I'll talk with Shane about this. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 21:08, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
Examples
Here are some examples I made for the Stargate Wiki FR:
- To see minor characters:
- Automatic generation of a line with five stamps using DPL with entry of the series, the season, and the first article sorted.
- Automatic generation of minor characters for the first page with automatic sort by last name
- Automatic creation of minor character stamps page links with automatic image update and automatic update of the first and the last character name of this page.
- To see objects:
- Automatic generation of a line. All you juste have to do is to put the correct category.
- Autogeneration of a page with the famous lines.
- To resume objects in a bottom navigation bar:
- Nav bar automaticaly updated (put the right category)
All you have to do with this kind or templates is to put the right category and DPL (with a purge) will do the rest. The main purpose of DPL is to avoid editing when the database can do the stuff for you. You don't have to edit an article or a template to update with new article of the same category. --LIMAFOX76 08:28, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
What about RFA and RFB for French BW ?
Hi Joe,
I'm on the verge to edit the policy for the french version of Request for Admninship and Request for Bureaucratship. I need your help for this two policies.
- Do I just translate the English version with the same vote system than the main site?
- Do I have to do it in another way?
- Is the principle of request the same than the main site?
Thanks for answering.--LIMAFOX76 11:25, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
- If you have any suggestions as to improve the policies in question, then that would work well. Until the French wiki has more contributors, I don't think the RFA and RFB are really going to work all that well, and so administrators are promoted on a case-by-case basis as determined by you, me, and Shane. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 13:10, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
- Until I design or translate all the templates needed and the main page, I think there will not be a lot of contributors. The main problem is the lack of French and French-speaking people who speak English fluently. French people are not very confortable with English, so it's very difficult for them to contribute unless they have seen the show and are fans. With your agreement, I will just create one page for RFA and RFB with the statement you said above (Shane, you and me).
FYI, all the episodes of the Re-Imagined Series have been aired in France, and have been released in DVD format (I just saw the Season 4 Part 2 Set yesterday in a supermarket) . --LIMAFOX76 14:22, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Advertising and problem on media repository
Hi Joe and Happy New Year,
As I already said to Shan, I can see that you succeed to bring back the wiki. Congratulations. I have two point to ask.
- I made a donation for the wiki to avoid advertising but I still have them on the screen, why? Thank you for your answer.
- On the media repository, I tried to upload an image. It is actually somewhere in the directory but the sofware is unable to create a thumbnail. It says that it cannot find the "convert" file on the server. So for now, it's impossible to add new images on the media repository.
Thanks for your answer. --LIMAFOX76 15:48, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
- Happy New Year to you too! :D
- Anyway, I went ahead and upgraded your account to sponsor status, so you shouldn't see the ads. If you do, try logging in and out again. If that doesn't work, a hard refresh should clear the cache. As for the convert issue, I'll have Shane look into it. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 15:55, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

InterBot and BS Pegasus
Hi Joe.
1. It seems that InterBot doesn't work because the interwiki link I made on the pages I created aren't duplicated on the other wikis.
2. I don't have access to BS Pegasus either. It says it's forbidden. Is there any problem since the server transfer or something?
Thanks for your answer. --LIMAFOX76 21:41, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
- Hi,
Still doesn't work for both points. Do you have any answer for that please? Thanks. --LIMAFOX76 14:23, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry, I've been pretty busy. (Barely have had time to really work on the wiki, other than to greet the newcomers.) To answer your questions:
- 1. Shane needs to reprogram the InterBot. He hasn't had time to do that as he's been working on projects for Best Buy.
- 2. The BS Pegasus site is down. No ETA on when that'll be back up as it isn't priority. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 01:35, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Calendar dates on auction items
Hi Joe,
I expanded the Colonial calendar#Different Dating Methods section with information from a couple of auction items and noticed in the process that you wrote at least some of the blog entries at battlestarprops.com. Do you recall seeing any calendar items I haven't mentioned yet, and if so, could you point me to their pictures? It would also be nice to see a higher resolution scan of Socrata's medal of valor document, if one is available.
Regards,
-- Graf Iblis 19:55, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
- I honestly never really paid all that much attention to the dating thing, since it was all made up anyway. (Star Trek's "stardate" system is a very good example of this, actually. It isn't until they did TNG that they really put thought into it.) There is very little consistency behind the dating on any of the paperwork; in television production, much of it is thrown together—some of it even at the very last minute—even taking into account the quality of BSG's paperwork being higher than other genre television series. It isn't until Caprica that they really tried to address the issue of the Colonial dating method, because it's simply not natural not to have characters not say "Hey Lacy, meet me for lunch on Saturday."
- As for photos of the stuff, the Propworx archive has photos of everything that's been auctioned through Propworx. I also know of a few fans who have won many paperwork documents from the BSG auctions (both live and via eBay) that have taken the time to scan them, but most of their work is on private boards and some prop replication communities. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 02:34, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. The scans on that site have a much higher resolution and I already found a couple of items with supposed dates. I would like to document them in the article primarily to establish that there was no real system in the re-imagined series as opposed to Caprica. Such random alphanumerics also suggest to the reader that the dates in Adama's dossier need not be correct necessarily (e.g. the year 20000+). -- Graf Iblis 18:16, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
"pos" extended parser function
Hi Joe,
I would like to ask if it is possible to add the "pos" Parser Function into the wiki, this will allow to do some research more easily (for example to do an action on pages with a certain text and not on the others). Thanks for your answer. --LIMAFOX76 12:57, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Jupiter-class battlestar issue
I have a problem with your edit of my edit on the Jupiter class battlestar Galactica. The book I refered to is canon since it was written by the science advisor to BSG and sactioned by SyFy and Ron Moore. If yoiu prefer your wiki not to contain official information then that is fine and I will not bother to add any other information to your site. I will rely solely on official material such as this book. Cancel my membersip please. Good Bye. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Lonewriter (talk • contribs).
- Please refer to Acceptable Sources, which list the sources of what makes something canon. Just because there is an error in a book sanctioned by Syfy Channel, does not mean it is automatically canon. As I've only started reading the book, I've already noticed errors (mostly with spelling, such as Cally's name), that raises a few doubts in my mind when it comes to how thoroughly the book was copyedited.
- As I believe I had explained, the episode that the writers of the book refer to ("Pegasus") does not make mention of Galactica's class. At all. So, they made a mistake, or improperly cited the source. (Now, if it came from the script for that episode, I can see that. We've used scripts as sources before.)
- Now, if Ron Moore or David Eick were to come out and say "well, they're right, Galactica is a Jupiter class" then we will certainly note that, and cite that it came from them. Furthermore, maybe I wasn't clear, but I'm not saying that we should throw out the reference at all, but it needs to be pointed out that the way the information is present is in direct contradiction to what viewers saw on screen.
- Believe me, were this information aired in "Pegasus" fans would have eaten that up, just like they (we) ate up the whole Mercury class reference that Adama made before Cain boarded the ship. :)
- Now, as to your immature comment, it does suggest that you probably wouldn't be a good editor here, because you don't seem to understand how to critically analyze information, or the necessity of viewing all information with a critical eye. That's fine. There are people who simply don't have that ability. There's nothing wrong with that. Also, you don't have to use the site, at all. I hate to be disingenuous and brusque, but if you're going to use appeals to emotion instead of actually bothering to do the research (which I, and many, many fans have done over the past five-plus years) then you're welcome to leave and never look back.
- However, let me be particularly clear when I say this: what I have done is pointed out this error, which you've brought to our attention, so thank you for that. Now, if you want to act like a prima donna and storm off in a huff, then that's your call. You're more than welcome to stay, or you are more than welcome to leave. Ball is in your court. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 02:58, 22 October 2010 (UTC)
William Adama edits
I seem to find the spoiler tag formatting (I edit on wikipedia but we have nothing similar there) so I'm just going to be as vague as I can be and hope you understand. While reading over the spoilered info on William Adama's page that you recently added I realized that you have a character connection slightly off. If you check my edit history, you'll see I made a similar change on a related page. Hope that's enough for you to see what I meant (since I can't edit the Old Man's page). Duram's files at Propworx
Hi Joe,
Have you preserved alternate photographs of Duram's files which are now on eBay? The available photo makes Clarice's file halfway legible, but I'm curious what's in Amanda's and other files. I'm not planning on buying them though, since I'm only interested in the information, not in provenance. Even so, thanks for participating in the auctions — the photos have provided so much useful information that would've normally disappeared with the shows. -- Graf Iblis 22:10, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
- I'd have to ask Jarrod, since he's the one who oversees the Caprica auction stuff out in LA. (I'm not in LA, so I don't have easy access to this stuff myself.) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 23:00, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
Reference in Template
What does putting the ref in break? I don't see anything unusual except that the 33 has to be bracketed to be a link. -- Noneofyourbusiness 22:47, 7 March 2011 (UTC)
- Issue is that the brackets are printed out, and they really shouldn't be. I guess I'll have to modify the infobox template to deal with that. Basically a separate field that is only for references, like "|seenref=". -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 00:42, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Not sure if you got my email or not, anyway, would you prefer to join the SIWA Network (Scifi independent wiki alliance)? http://siwanetwork.webs.com Basically just lets more people interlink with these wikis and its always good to have more links to your site laying around. It costs nothing and we dont really ask for anything in return. Escyos 06:35, 4 June 2011 (EDT)
- Thank you for the offer, but I will decline. I really see no benefit for this wiki and its contributors in being a part of the SIWA Network. In fact, I feel that our inclusion would only be beneficial for you, seeing as we have a wide exposure. We've run into loose fan organizations like SIWA before, and frankly they are not worth the bandwidth that it takes to pull up the webpage. Our experience is that such things are not professionally run and are basically glorified fly-by-night operations operated by unprofessional, doe-eyed fans with unrealistic expectations. Nothing personal against you, it is just our experience. And, as for traffic and links, we've found that being a part of a glorified "webring" has no return on investiment. A majority of new traffic has always, and without fail, come from two sources: 1) word-of-mouth (forums and social networks), and 2) search engines. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 10:25, 4 June 2011 (EDT)
I had 22 new visitors to my site because of SIWA. Your loss i guess. Also it really doesn't make it less offensive when you call me: unprofessional, doe-eyed fan with unrealistic expectations then say no offence. Even you should see that. Well if you change your mind, let me know. Escyos 11:56, 4 June 2011 (EDT)
- And how many of those 22 people will stick around and contribute in the long-haul? Since there are so many Stargate wikis out there, those results aren't surprising... and, don't get your hopes up, as they will be short lived. Traffic from web rings and "alliances" is short-lived, and with extremely poor to negligible long-term ROI. I've been running websites for the last 15 years, so I am well aware of what I'm taking about.
- Furthermore, I was not making a personal attack against you: I was making a general observation about such organizations. However, since you are keen to make it about yourself: given your behavior in the past towards another member of this website (and bringing problems from an outside wiki to this Wiki directly and without provocation from us), I find that unprofessional. End of subject. Thank you for the offer, and have a splendid day. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 12:16, 4 June 2011 (EDT)
Wow, take it overboard much. I was going to link certain articles like actors other work here etc but because of that attitude, you can forget it Escyos 12:21, 4 June 2011 (EDT)
- Your attitude and sour disposition are the problems here. After all, you were the one who brought outside problems from another website to this one. You initiated it here. You deliberately sought the user in question, tracked them to this website, and brought your problems to an open forum instead of taking it up with the user via e-mail. You involved us, and I put a stop to it. I have no ill will towards you personally, but your immature behavior here and your inability to properly deal with issues in a mature manner exemplifies why we are careful in associating with other organizations and websites.

- You don't see the benefit in having a couple hundred extra links to your site?...... Ok then. Escyos 15:02, 5 August 2011 (EDT)
- Question: How is it that a "couple hundred extra links" equate affiliation? Anyone can add links to any wiki and not be affiliated. At best, it's link swapping. My issue with the so-called "affiliation" proposal you set before us is that you haven't presented a clear idea of what it means, only vague concepts. Your proposal lacks details on these important elements: purpose, method of execution/standards and practices, and the responsibilities of each party. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 15:37, 5 August 2011 (EDT)
- I always thought of it more as like references on a resume (sort of) essentially that people trust your site and know that you would not affiliate with some fly-by-night operation-wiki full of useless crap. All it is is like a greenlight for users, they know that they can visit your site and it will be good, the only responsibility would be a link with any affiliates and any relevant links, which for me would probably be to actor/crew other work on either show. I don't know if you've even visited my site yet but I am growing it everyday and doing my best to reel in new users, your welcome to ask me anything about it. It's not some 142 page wikia site with no pics and a desperate admin trying to scam people. Escyos 15:34, 6 August 2011 (EDT)
- Frankly, most of our web traffic has always come from either Wikipedia or search engines, and most people can already see the quality of the Battlestar Wiki... Link swapping does not work as well as you apparently think it does. So, not sure how affiliating with your network would really be to anyone's best interest, considering that we dominate search engine results.
- The best piece of advice I can give you is just develop content on your wiki to the best of your, and your team's, ability. Traffic will come naturally that way. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 16:33, 8 August 2011 (EDT)

Not sure this is a gaffe
He_That_Believeth_In_Me#Gaffes contains this final paragraph, which I think should be deleted:
- Tracey tells Baltar prior to their intercourse that the door to the group's hideout is locked and that only the two of them are in the room, but when Jeanne returns with Derrick, she is able to reenter even though both Tracey and Baltar are still asleep (presumably she said this to put Baltar more at ease).
Saying that a door is locked does not preclude the possibility of others entering. A locked door can be unlocked. Other doors on Galactica are locked with keypads (like the one rigged to blow up Romo Lampkin), and there is no reason to think Jeanne would not have the entry code. Dogger55 16:12, 11 July 2011 (EDT)
- Many of Galactica's hatches are lockable only from one side, not both. Further, only small arms lockers and other sensitive areas have keypads. Not every door has one. This isn't the starship Enterprise, after all. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 16:26, 11 July 2011 (EDT)
- I wasn't sure; that's why I wrote instead of deleting or changing. However, I went back and took a closer look. When Baltar first arrives at his new home (10:45), they knock to gain entry and the door is unlocked from the inside. You see a wheel for bolting/unbolting the door on the outside and on the inside. Around 14:30, you hear the door close and the bolt turn when Paula and Jeanne leave, and no other such sounds from then until Tracey "makes her move" on Baltar and agrees that the door is locked. It seems to me that whatever means they used to secure it, the door could be locked & unlocked from either side, and was clearly locked from the outside until the time Jeanne returned. I am really curious on how you are able to keep this wiki running, with only source of revenue being a few paying members, AdSense, AdBrite, and a few affiliations with Amazon and other stores. Re-imagined categories
Greetings, I have a quick question, I have noticed that there seems to be "duplicate" categories for the re-imagined continuity, "RDM" and "TRS", that seems to be going along with the page renaming. What my question is, are pages supposed to be moved out of "RDM" and placed into "TRS" or something? --Typhoeus 22:31, 4 September 2011 (EDT)
- Basically, if it's in the "RDM" universe (that means Caprica, Blood & Chrome, Re-imagined BSG) then it's classified as RDM. Otherwise, if it is specific to one show, such as Helena Cain, then it is classified under both "RDM" and "TRS". Originally, we used RDM for just the Re-imagined Series, until the spinoffs/prequels came along. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 23:04, 4 September 2011 (EDT)
Recent spaming
Is it just me, or is there a recent increase in spamming? I am not around as often as I would like, so I am not entirely sure on this. If I could ask, what sort of anti spam features do you have? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Typhoeus (talk • contribs).
- It comes and goes. Basically, these are humans (instead of bots) who are paid to spam, and thus solve the captchas and the like. They have to fill out a captcha when they sign up for an account, and when they add a link in any page (new or established) a captcha will also come up. We have a blacklist for terms and the like, but that's why they come up with crazy titles for the spam pages. We've enabled a variety of anti-spam measures, but that's mostly good against automated bots. IP blocking isn't an option in these cases, as the manual spammers use proxies, and thus change their IP address every time they create a new account and spam. We could go draconian and prevent new accounts from posting, BUT then we make it extremely difficult for new contributors to actually contribute. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 11:31, 7 September 2011 (EDT)

Recent spaming (option)
With all the recent spamming, I think we should temporarily ban new sign ups for a while. It's just becoming too annoying seeing useless pages. I know you would disagree with the suggestion, but I see it as the only option available. Corey "Shadow" Danian 08:58, 16 October 2011 (EDT)
- In my opinion, but I'm not the one who decides for this, It would be a mistake to do so. Yes it's annoying to see all this rubbish but by doing so, we prevent real genuine contributors to sign up and contribute, even if, for the moment there are not so many new real genuine contributors but there is still hope. Even in French Battlestar wiki, some spammers try to pollute the wiki but we are here to prevent this and to clean this wiki. They are more now, but not like Wikipedia, so we can clean quicky. But as I said first, it's just my opinion. Cheers.--LIMAFOX76 09:26, 16 October 2011 (EDT)
- I feel the frustration, and I've even briefly considered this as an option, but I don't see it as a big enough issue to temporarily ban new sign-ups (or run them through a rigorous sign-up process). Spamming has always been an issue on any Wiki, and to lock things down in such a matter would really dissuade genuine contributors from contributing. I know it may not seem like it, but we've always been spammed, and we will continue to be spammed; the volume of spam just seems massive because we're not expanding much in the way of content, like the way we were when the show was airing.
- Further, taking into consideration that most new contributors would not waste their time trying to jump through hoops just to contribute, we would just be shooting ourselves in the foot in the long run. (Actually, it takes only a few minutes to deal with them. Delete their contributions and ban them.) We've been very good about responding to spam in a reasonably timely manner, so I really don't see the need for such draconian measures right now. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 12:42, 16 October 2011 (EDT)

Hi Joe,
Is it possible please to set the two following parameters in the LocalSetting.php file?
- $wgRestrictDisplayTitle to false;
- $wgAllowDisplayTitle to true.
Reason: allowing permission to see episode titles like the {{ép}} template. In the same way, can you disable the automatic système which add a caps letter at each word in the title. Thank you very much. Cheers.--LIMAFOX76 12:33, 17 November 2011 (EST)

- Ah, I added quotes around the "false" and "true" variables, and MediaWiki doesn't like that. Should work now. The only thing is that you can't use wiki syntax within the {{DISPLAYTITLE}} code, since it renders the HTML tags as text. (See the "33" page.)
- Also, the uppercase thing for the first word is a CSS attribute (as I recall) in the style sheet, so I can fix that. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 14:04, 17 November 2011 (EST)

- I think it's possible, just see the italic title template on Wikipedia. It is used especially for feature films and it's using wiki markup. May be it's just a parameter to set. --LIMAFOX76 15:28, 17 November 2011 (EST)
- I've looked through the template, and it's impossible to do it within the DISPLAYTITLE syntax itself. The italics must be applied on the outside, like so: ''{{DISPLAYTITLE}}''. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 15:58, 17 November 2011 (EST)
- At least, I will be able to put French quotes signe in the title. Yet, there is still First letter caps appearing on each word following the first one. --LIMAFOX76 16:42, 17 November 2011 (EST)

Possible solution against spammers
Hi Joe,
It seems that we may have a solution against spammers. It is called QuestyCaptcha. Semantic MediaWiki has used it for two weeks as they were invaded by spammers like us (same username style) and the number of spammers has been largely reduced since the installation. - Yes. Spamming isn't a new problem on the Wiki; it's one that we've been dealing with on and off since the site's founding in 2005. The issue is that about half the so-called "spam blocking" software doesn't actually work on "manual spammers" — i.e. actual people behind the computer solving captchas and what not. Further, many bot software programs are actually better at circumventing and solving captchas, and so it's really a constant fight to keep up.
- Also, half the extensions in your list are either beta, outdated (only working with older version of MW), or tend to conflict with other extensions. As I recall, we did have AntiBot running once, but that didn't quite work out well. I'll have to see if that works again after I upgrade the entire system to the 1.18.x series, though. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 12:40, 4 February 2012 (EST)

I tested QuestyCaptcha on my English Stargate Wiki and let my French one without. Results: 5 spam attacks in one night for the French one (see here) and none for the English one (see here).
