As any good Greco-Roman major knows, Durandal was Hector's sword at Troy, which passed down to Roland, knight of Chalemagne, in the aptly named "Song of Roland" (''Chanson de Roland'').  Many of the Marathon computers had names taken from it.  Bungee (the company that made Marathon) seems to agree in thinking that no one actually played these, as many plot points in Halo (also by Bungee) are kind of taken from it, i.e. (''Spoilers'') Cortana seems to be in the process of going rampant like Durandal.  Sublte hints in Halo 1, full blown twist ending in Halo 2, etc. etc. --[[User:Ricimer|Ricimer]] 18:21, 8 January 2006 (EST)

AHHH!

Welcome to the Wiki. Please don't go Rampant on us. *wink* --Day 10:12, 8 January 2006 (EST)

I was born rampant. Durandal 13:15, 8 January 2006 (EST)
Wow. And I thought I was the only one who remembered the old "Marathon" games. I still have all 3 on my Mac and play them on business trips. "Frog blast the vent core!" never sounds so sweet. You guys know that the games are free to download now? Oh, and welcome to the Wiki, Durandal! --Spencerian 12:49, 8 January 2006 (EST)
Actually, I'm a 'Thon nut. My iBook is named Mjolnir X, my old *nix box is Traxus, my iPod is Leela... Need I go on? Durandal 13:15, 8 January 2006 (EST)
Didn't this guy escape the universe and become a god or something? --Redwall 13:07, 8 January 2006 (EST)
Not quite a god, but close enough for colonial work. *grin* Durandal 13:15, 8 January 2006 (EST)

As any good Greco-Roman major knows, Durandal was Hector's sword at Troy, which passed down to Roland, knight of Chalemagne, in the aptly named "Song of Roland" (Chanson de Roland). Many of the Marathon computers had names taken from it. Bungee (the company that made Marathon) seems to agree in thinking that no one actually played these, as many plot points in Halo (also by Bungee) are kind of taken from it, i.e. (Spoilers) Cortana seems to be in the process of going rampant like Durandal. Sublte hints in Halo 1, full blown twist ending in Halo 2, etc. etc. --Ricimer 18:21, 8 January 2006 (EST)

I'm pretty sure you just made up that bit about Hector... --April Arcus 18:30, 8 January 2006 (EST)
I have read the Song of Roland for class. At one point they say his sword Durandal is the sword of Hector.--Ricimer 19:02, 8 January 2006 (EST)
I'm not all that sure that Cortana is going rampant. Just call it a gut feeling. Meanwhile, yes, Halo, no matter what Bungie says, might as well be taking place in the same universe as 'Thon. Durandal 18:50, 8 January 2006 (EST)
Same here, never heard about the Hector's sword connection to the Song of Roland. I named my son Roland and the wild thing is, according to my ex-mother-in-law's genealogy, he actually is a Charlemagne descendant. I have to verify the source on that one, but whew... :) He's going to get a COOL present from Museum Replicas for his 18th birthday, I think... --Spencerian 19:05, 8 January 2006 (EST)
I always thought that Halo was kind of, well, maybe Marathon's grandson or so... Same genes, similar upbringing, a bit younger and fresher. ;) The real key is this: Find all the Marathon logos hidden all around the game. And by hidden I mean, like, emblazoned on the side of Pillar of Autumn and on the end of the Captain's pipe in the opening of Halo 1. By the by... What's with Bungee and ship names? It makes sense for the Covenant to have wacky ship names that reek of religeous overtones, but... Pillar of Autumn? In Amber Clad? Are these literary allusions that I'm missing or something? --Day 21:26, 8 January 2006 (EST)
What? It sounds nice and poetic. Frank Exchange of Views would have been nice, or Under New Management, and why not the ever popular Lollipop?--Ricimer 23:18, 8 January 2006 (EST)
I shall christen my flag ship Ricimer's Wit ... nearly as good as naming it Sabre. *wink* Speaking of ship names that are also valid sentence constituents, the message board for Sword of the Stars (a 4X game to be released in the somewhat near future) has some interesting ideas. We're getting very side-tracked. Heh. --Day 01:29, 9 January 2006 (EST)
Oh - my - god. Ric made a funny. That's it. I can die now. --Watcher 16:36, 9 January 2006 (EST)
Actually, Iain M. Banks made the funny, but Ricimer did display his good taste in reading material. --April Arcus 18:39, 9 January 2006 (EST)
Well yeah I didn't come up with that it's from some book series. Used to be Castle Anthrax...bad name, but we are nice...--Ricimer 21:33, 9 January 2006 (EST)
