Design
Overview
The Valkyrie type is one of the smaller ships in service with the Colonial Fleet. Measuring around 700 meters long, it was about the length of the Flight pod on a Galactica type battlestar.
The Valkyrie type line of ships was first developed and deployed alongside the Galactica type nearly 50 years before the Fall of the Colonies during the First Cylon War. At the time, they appeared to function as a support vessel for battlestar groups, and not as a flagship (TRS: "Blood and Chrome"). In the years since, the line has become a forerunner in the Colonial fleet, out numbering the remaining Galactica type and Mercury class fleets. Ships of the Valkyrie line are some of the smallest ships in the modern Colonial Fleet, carrying less Vipers and Raptors as their larger counterparts. Despite this, their crews are not afraid to tackle threats head on, as three ships of the class where known to move in and engage Cylon basestars over Caprica, before fleet communications went down (TRS: "The Plan").

It featured four large sub-light engines, a number of smaller manoeuvring thrusters littered around the ship. In addition to this, it is presumed to have featured an FTL drive.
Layout
Physically it was far more "jagged" then other battlestar classes, with numerous sharp edges offset by numerous curved lines. The hull was covered with guns, missile launchers and sensors, giving it a sharp and streamlined but functional look. The class was far more compact then most others, with the pods closer to the main hull and the head being only a couple meters wider then the main hull. The underside of the ship showed much of the internal structures, and lacked significant weaponry, indicating that it was not designed to be exposed to fire in a battle.
Main hull
Flight pods were single layered, each consisting of 3 Viper launch tubes located in a rectangular section underneath the pod. The tubes ran parallel to the flight deck and pointing forwards. The launch tubes presumably operated in a different way to those on larger ships to allow a higher launch rate and may suggest a more offensively oriented approach to Viper launches. The tubes were also significantly longer. The Valkyrie type appeared to lack the Raptor pads seen on the Mercury Class, however, there were sections on either side near the tip of the head that may have served this purpose.
The Valkyrie type is one of the smaller ships in service with the Colonial Fleet. Measuring around 700 meters long, it was about the half the size of a Galactica type battlestar. Overall, it still shares the "common" battlestar design, consisting of a "alligator head", mid-ship section with flight pods, and aft engineering section, housing the main sublight engines. Since she has such a small size, many of her components are exposed, or semi exposed on the underside of the ship, the FTL drive being the most prominent (TRS: "The Plan"). Physically it was far more "jagged" then other battlestar classes, with numerous sharp edges offset by numerous curved lines. The hull was covered with batteries, missile launchers, and numerous hatches, giving it a sharp and streamlined but functional look.

The Valkyrie type has more weapons per square meter then any other class. Equipped with 20 small turrets, and 33 heavier (though much smaller then on other classes) ones, it has a huge number of guns. Presumably, there are an unknown number of point defense guns that would be located between the armor plating, much like the Mercury-class. This class mostly relies on missiles weapons than other classes, with the large turrets capable of firing small anti-fighter missiles, and with at least 6 silos containing ship to ship missiles.

Size and disposition of a typical Valkyrie-type's airwings is never stated, however in "The Plan" Valkyrie has at least 20 Vipers nearby. Yet, this is not evidence that this represents the full airwing.
The flight pods on the ships of the line, serve the same purpose as they do on her larger counterparts, however are not able to carry as many planes, or support larger vessels, like the Galactica type or Mercury class can. Despite being over 40 years old, the flight pods do not retract on this class either, and remain completely stationary, even for FTL jumps.

The hanger deck facilities are smaller, possibly no larger than those seen on the Orion class, and sits in between the flight deck, and the Viper launch tubes which run parallel to the pods. Having only three tubes per pod, the Valkyrie line of ships has significantly less launching capabilities than any other battlestar in the fleet, however, this doesn't keep them from being on the front lines, and may suggest a more offensively oriented approach to Viper launches. (TRS: "Hero", "The Plan").

Although a small hull (at least when compared to ships like the Mercury Class or Galactica type and not as small as the Orion type) these ships were heavily used. It may have served in a role similar to cruisers in modern navies as they are shown being used for a number of roles including patrols, covert operations and even planetary protection. The small size, mass production, and apparent range of abilities presumably meant that it was perfect for a peace time fleet, as they would be cheaper to produce than the larger Mercury or Galactica types, and would have a number of uses. It may have lacked the ability to produce Vipers unlike it's larger cousins.

The Valkyrie type battlestar was first developed and deployed during the First Cylon War. This line of ships are still in service, and actively deployed over 40 years later, before the Fall of the Colonies, and appear to make up a majority of the Colonial Fleet.
