Barry W. Brolly (also credited as Barry Brolly and Barry Wayne Brolly) is a Canadian set decorator and art department professional who served as lead dresser on the Battlestar Galactica miniseries in 2003. Based in British Columbia, Canada, he worked in the province's film industry for over two decades in roles spanning art department coordinator, construction coordinator, set dresser, assistant set decorator, lead dresser, and set decorator.
Career
editBrolly entered the film industry in 1981 as art department coordinator on Porky's, a Canadian co-produced comedy filmed in Miami, Florida and directed by Bob Clark.[external 1] He moved into set dressing work on productions based in British Columbia, serving as assistant set decorator on one episode of the anthology series The Hitchhiker in 1985.[external 2]
Between 1985 and 1986, Brolly worked as construction coordinator on five episodes of the CBC adventure series Danger Bay, filmed in Vancouver.[external 3] In 1986, he served as head greensman on The Clan of the Cave Bear, a Warner Bros. prehistoric drama directed by Michael Chapman and filmed in British Columbia.[external 4]
Brolly worked as set decorator on Malone (1987), a Burt Reynolds action film directed by Harley Cokeliss and filmed primarily in Hedley and Princeton, British Columbia.[external 5] The following year he served as set dresser on Distant Thunder (1988), a drama starring John Lithgow and Ralph Macchio, which filmed across several locations in the Greater Vancouver area.[external 6]
He served as set decorator on two consecutive films by director Amy Heckerling shot in Vancouver: Look Who's Talking (1989) and Look Who's Talking Too (1990), both TriStar romantic comedies starring John Travolta and Kirstie Alley.[external 7] He also served as set decorator on The Hitman (1991), a Chuck Norris action film directed by Aaron Norris and filmed in Vancouver.[external 8]
In 1998, Brolly served as assistant set decorator on Deep Rising, a Stephen Sommers-directed action-horror film produced at Versatile Shipyards and The Bridge Studios in Burnaby, British Columbia, for which he was credited as Barry Wayne Brolly.[external 9] He subsequently worked as set decorator on Jack London's Call of the Wild, a 2000 Animal Planet adventure series filmed in Maple Ridge, British Columbia.[external 10]
Brolly served as lead dresser on one episode of the Battlestar Galactica miniseries in 2003, the two-part production filmed in Vancouver that served as the pilot for the Re-imagined Series.[external 11] The lead dresser, also known as leadman, is a supervisory role within the set decoration department responsible for managing the placement and striking of set dressing on location and stage.
Following the miniseries, Brolly served as set dresser on The Butterfly Effect (2004), filmed in Vancouver and directed by Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber, credited as Barry Brolly.[external 12] That same year he worked uncredited as on-set dresser on one episode of Stargate: Atlantis.[external 13] His latest listed credit is as on-set dresser for the second unit on In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (2007), directed by Uwe Boll, for which he was credited as Barry Wayne Brolly.[external 14]
