Coreen Mayrs, C.S.A. is a Canadian casting director and filmmaker who served as casting director (alongside Heike Brandstatter) for the Re-imagined Series, The Plan, and Caprica.[1]
Biography
editMayrs was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1970.[2] She studied archaeology at the University of British Columbia, graduating before entering the film industry.[3] Mayrs began her career working as a production assistant in Vancouver before transitioning to casting direction.[3]
Career
editCasting Director
editMayrs established herself as a prominent casting director in Vancouver, where she worked extensively on productions filmed in the city. Her early notable work included casting for Chris Carter's The X-Files, Millennium, Harsh Realm, and The Lone Gunmen.[3][4]
Mayrs has frequently collaborated with fellow casting director Heike Brandstatter, forming the casting partnership Mayrs/Brandstatter. Together they have cast numerous television series and feature films, including the X-Men film franchise, Juno (2007), Supernatural (2005-2020), Big Eyes (2014), and the Fantastic Four films.[1][5] Their work has also included Capote (2005), Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010), Tron: Legacy (2010), Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), This Means War (2012), Smallville, Hellcats, and Falling Skies.[6][7][8] The casting team has earned a reputation for quality work, with actor Michael Hogan noting they "always cast great stuff."[9]
Mayrs is a member of the Casting Society of America (C.S.A.).[10]
Battlestar Galactica Franchise
editFor the Re-imagined Series, Mayrs and Brandstatter served as casting directors for the Miniseries, as well as episodes "33," "Water," "Bastille Day," "Act of Contrition," "You Can't Go Home Again," "Litmus," "Flesh and Bone," "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down," and "The Hand of God."[11] They continued their work on The Plan and cast 18 episodes of the spin-off series Caprica.[1][12]
Filmmaker
editIn addition to her casting work, Mayrs has written and directed short films. Her directorial debut, A Feeling Called Glory, won multiple awards including a Gemini Award for Best Short Dramatic Program in 2000.[13] The film also earned her Gemini Award nominations for Best Direction and Best Writing in a Dramatic Program or Mini-Series, as well as the Nell Shipman Award for writing and directing.[3][13]
Mayrs directed a second short film, The Rememberer, which won the Reel Frontier Award for Jury Special Recognition in the Best Short Take category at the 2000 Arizona International Film Festival.[13] Describing her filmmaking philosophy, Mayrs stated she loves creating films that evoke both laughter and tears while exploring absurd subject matter that could potentially be reality-based.[3]

editMayrs has received two Primetime Emmy Awards and numerous other accolades for her casting work:[14]
- 2007 - Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Casting for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special for Broken Trail (shared with Wendy Weidman, Heike Brandstatter, Jackie Lind, Barbara Fiorentino, and Rebecca Mangieri)[13][15]
- 2003 - Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series for American Dreams (shared with Jason La Padura, Natalie Hart, and Laura Adler)[14][13]
- 2000 - Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series for Freaks and Geeks (shared with Allison Jones and Jill Greenberg)[16]
- 2000 - Gemini Award for Best Short Dramatic Program for A Feeling Called Glory[13]
Mayrs has also received multiple Artios Award nominations from the Casting Society of America, including a 2021 nomination for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist and a 2017 nomination for an undisclosed drama series pilot.[13]
