Ted Gannon is an American composer, sound designer, and mixer who wrote music for Battlestar Galactica promotional materials for the Sci Fi Channel while working at Bionic Media.

Career

Early Work

Gannon began his career in the music industry, collaborating with prominent artists including Lenny Kravitz, Prince Paul, and Wu-Tang Clan. He also worked on television shows such as Beavis and Butt-Head early in his career.

As a musician, Gannon is proficient on a wide range of instruments, including the shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute. He played his first performance at the legendary CBGB's venue at age 15 and made his vocal debut on the first-ever horror-core hip hop single, "Diary of a Madman" by Gravediggaz.

Bionic Media (2005-2006)

Gannon built his portfolio as a mixer, sound designer, and composer at Manhattan post-production facilities Subvoyant and Bionic Media. During his tenure at Bionic Media, he worked on promotional materials for several major cable networks, including the Sci Fi Channel, Comedy Central, USA Network, various Nickelodeon networks (Nick at Nite, Nicktoons), Food Network, and History Channel.

Battlestar Galactica Promos

While at Bionic Media, Gannon composed original music for Battlestar Galactica promotional materials for the Sci Fi Channel. He also wrote music for promos promoting Tin Man, a 2007 Sci Fi Channel miniseries that reimagined The Wonderful Wizard of Oz with Zooey Deschanel, Richard Dreyfuss, and Alan Cumming.

During this period, Gannon also composed music for comedy films and independent features.

Northern Lights (2007-2010)

In November 2007, Northern Lights, an award-winning editorial and post-production service in New York City, launched an audio division and hired Gannon as its founding mixer, sound designer, and composer. Northern Lights partner Mark Littman explained the decision to expand into audio services: "Our clients have been asking for audio services for some time now. We felt it was the right time and right fit to do so with Ted. Similar to our philosophy with Mr. Wonderful, each additional aspect of a project that we can control allows us to add so much more overall value to the project as a whole."

Partner David Gioiella added that the company sought someone with diverse skills: "Our company is driven by the collaboration of creative people, and we wanted someone with the skills and background needed for our diversity of projects. We've been hearing about Ted for years, and feel he's a great match."

Upon joining Northern Lights, Gannon immediately began work on a commercial campaign for Centrum, episodic promos for USA Network's Law & Order, and a game opener for the NHL in conjunction with VFX and design company Mr. Wonderful.

Gannon described his philosophy on the integration of music and sound: "I consider mixing, sound design and music as the same art, so we were all on the same page. It's nice to come in and establish this kind of framework right off the bat." He particularly valued Northern Lights' tight integration with Mr. Wonderful for design and graphics work, noting: "I'm really excited to work with them on the graphics, and give input in the early phases of a project. Music and sound are not just an afterthought now."

The new audio room was equipped with Digidesign Pro Tools, a Digidesign Command|8 control surface, a voice-over booth, and Apple Logic Pro software for music composition.

While at Northern Lights, Gannon composed and performed music for Hilary Duff's web video miniseries The Chase, featured on YouTube to promote her clothing line for DKNY called "Femme." The series' first episode garnered over 350,000 views in its first week and became one of YouTube's most-watched videos.

SuperExploder (2010-present)

In 2010, Northern Lights officially launched its audio post facilities as SuperExploder, a sister company to Northern Lights, joining production company Bodega and design/animation firm Mr. Wonderful under the Northern Lights umbrella. Gannon became a founding member of the SuperExploder team alongside fellow mixer/sound designer Jody Nazzaro, Executive Producer Beth Cummins, and Audio Assistant Tony Sprayberry.

SuperExploder offers comprehensive sound services including mixing, sound design, creative services, and casting for commercials, promos, radio, feature films, web content, and experiential projects. The facility includes five mix rooms, including a John Storyk-designed 5.1 mix studio completed in 2010.

As a senior composer, sound designer, and mixer at SuperExploder, Gannon has collaborated with major clients including USA, Nickelodeon, Hachette, Luvs, Nike, and Prudential. His work spans television promos for networks including Paramount+, PBS, and various cable networks, as well as commercial campaigns for major brands.

Filmography

Gannon has extensive credits as a sound designer, mixer, and composer in film and television. His sound department work includes Hello Lonesome (2010), for which he also composed the original score, Invitation to a Suicide (2004), A Yiddish World Remembered (2004), Breath Control: The History of the Human Beat Box (2002), and I Think I Do (1997).

His composition credits include the television series Grossmalerman! (2011), Medical Maverick (2006), and Captain Cornelius Cartoon's Cartoon Lagoon (2012), as well as numerous short films.
