::Worse case scenario is that we find out that the MySpace thing doesn't work out for us and we kill it. Interestingly though, I should note that Matt and Nat from BSGCast contacted me through my personal MySpace page, so that can be an indication of the potential usefulness of a BSWiki presence on MySpace. I would agree, however, with a presence on Facebook as well. Facebook does seem to be a lot better with its API and overall usefulness, lack of spam, and other nastiness. Based on the results so far, I've launched the MySpace portal here. As I've noted in "ze blog" post, the full launch (where we promote the heck out of it) begins Friday June 8th. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 18:48, 6 June 2007 (CDT)

Thoughts

I like the idea. I loathe MySpace personally as I am not a social animal and prefer my anonymity (I know, I know, next thing I'll say is "Get off my lawn you crazy kids!"), but for the wiki, I think it is a great way to generate publicity. Our look and logo would transfer well there, the personal forum allows quick Q&A and we can moderate the weirdoes. I'm game for it. --Spencerian 18:53, 4 May 2007 (CDT) (Talk - Contrib Skillz - Edit Skillz)

Actually, Mercifull already made a BSWiki theme for his own personal MySpace, so, yes, it definitely transfers well there. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 19:05, 4 May 2007 (CDT)
Concur. I'm not a MySpace guy either, but I think it'd be another way to get feedback, and sew some more connections into this patchwork quilt of fandom. Very web 2.0, so I'm sure Merc will be all over it. --Steelviper 22:58, 5 May 2007 (CDT)
My theme needs some work because I only did it roughly based off another theme that someone else had but I guess it could easily be made a bit better for more general use. The only other thing is that a lot of people, especially in the UK, have kinda gone off MySpace recently due to the spamming problems and malware advertisements and people seem to have migrated to Facebook. How do we decide which social network to support and which ones to ignore? --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 02:57, 8 May 2007 (CDT)
MySpace is one place where I can not contribute. That would really hurt my job. Shane (T - C - E) 05:15, 8 May 2007 (CDT)
What would actually be the purpose of it though? I mean we don't really want wiki discussion on other sites so would it purely be an advertisement or would we allow comments? --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 07:04, 8 May 2007 (CDT)
Yes, the MySpace presence would be for advertising / feedback purposes only. We would allow comments, but they would be moderated so that none of the spam or other MySpace cruft would cause problems on the page. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 16:36, 8 May 2007 (CDT)
I think it'd MOSTLY be for advertising/networking, I think allowing comments might allow another means of feedback (once you wade through all the spam). It may not be the latest and greatest thing, but it appears to be (still) insanely popular, and another potential source of recruiting/feedback. --Steelviper 07:19, 8 May 2007 (CDT)
So long as everything were directed to the wiki/blog etc then I suppose it would be good. There are a LOT of people registered to the site. I don't see how it would get new people to the wiki though, I mean how would people search for it. If the only way to find the myspace page is via the wiki/blog then we will have failed to gain more people via the medium. --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 07:51, 8 May 2007 (CDT)
It's a bit of a chicken and egg problem, but maybe only at the beginning. If people who are already on BSWiki, link the site in their MySpace profile, then there might be a point where friends of theirs check out the BSWiki site and thus notice us for the first time. On the whole I'm neutral about it though. It's a plan to attract more people, but MySpace is a horrible, horrible place. --Serenity 07:53, 8 May 2007 (CDT)
MySpace has its uses, for all the stupid crap that goes along with it. It's not so much horrible (ok, maybe it is) as totally misused. It's put me back in contact with a lot of old friends, etc. It's definitely useful for advertising/networking. It would be yet another thing to maintain, of course. As far as people finding the MySpace page, I wouldn't worry about that. People will put "Battlestar" into the MySpace Search feature. I'm more concerned about all the spam, fake "friends", and other stuff we'd be sorting constantly. JubalHarshaw 07:57, 8 May 2007 (CDT)
Using MySpace for promotion purposes is fine by me, although I resemble Spence in that I'm not active there and have no intention ever to be. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 11:25, 8 May 2007 (CDT)
Worse case scenario is that we find out that the MySpace thing doesn't work out for us and we kill it. I concur with the Facebook option as well as the promotion through MySpace. Just be sure to keep caution about spam, spammers and Cylon infiltrators. DrWho42 17:33, 9 May 2007 (CDT)
