Fanfiction[edit]
Can I make articles about fanfic series I like? Because my slash fanfiction group thought it would be cool if we could post stuff here. Like the Adama Glare article which is pretty cool. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by GuyIncognito (talk • contribs).
- Sorry, but no. We are not a collection for fanfiction. You might be able to add your link to that article, but since it's slash...I'm really not sure. Maybe someone else can weigh in on that.
- Also, please sign your comments with four tildes: --~~~~ --Serenity 10:26, 16 July 2007 (CDT)
- Linking to slash is permissible, as so long as there is a "worksafe" warning on it, and we note that adult content may exist on said website. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 11:13, 16 July 2007 (CDT)
- Also note that the Adama Glare page is a silly page, a rarely used feature on BSGWiki.--RUSnooky 10:29, 16 July 2007 (CDT)
- What do you mean rarely used, there's like over 20 of those. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by GuyIncognito (talk • contribs).
- Well, one could argue that there is a silly page inflation, but it's not the same as fan fiction. Those pages generally poke fun at episodes, characters or events directly seen in the show. Some are articles about funny behind the scenes material. Two of the articles are official gag-reel related. One is about the R&D TV clips at the end of the episodes. They aren't completely made up and pertain more directly towards the onscreen content than fan fiction. That's not meant as a slight against fan fiction, but BSWiki is dedicated to documenting the official material. The silly pages are already stretching that a bit, but opening the gates to fan fiction any further would probably create a precedent for anyone who wants to advertise and post fan material here. This way we have a clear line on what can be written here and what not. Of course I understand that you might reach more readers by being posted here, but there are other places for that. As said, a link might be doable, but better get some more admin opinions on that. --Serenity 10:40, 16 July 2007 (CDT)

- Hey there's an article on "New Caprican Loco Weed" that you gave a lot of attention, but that doesn't seem too "official". —The preceding unsigned comment was added by GuyIncognito (talk • contribs).
- Just running some numbers here, but 20 out of 2400 articles is under 1% of the content on the wiki. Even then, the content in them is more canonical than fan fiction, such as the Numerology and Season 3 gag reel. Again, we have nothing against fan fiction, but we do have an article on fan fiction, which does include links to fan fiction in the Galactica universe.
- Also, if you care to discuss fan fiction, may we recommend the Battlestar Forum? Also, in the future, BattlestarPegasus.com (our work-in-progress sister site) will feature a wiki specifically for fan fiction content, since there does seem to be interest in that, in addition to an Uncyclopedia version of the Battlestar Wiki. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 11:13, 16 July 2007 (CDT)
- There doesn't really seem to be much on BattlestarPegasus; when was this going to happen? Why can't I just put more fanfic and relationship stuff on here?... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by GuyIncognito (talk • contribs).
- Fan fiction is a no. We're not here to document fan fiction. As for BSP.com, expect some changes to begin occuring within three weeks. (That's my personal goal, since it's very low priority for me right now, particularly with my laptop needing to have its HDD fixed, the launch of Frak Media and the forthcoming Battlestar Alliance stuff.) However, BSP.com will document fan fiction, and have the Battlestar Galcatica Uncyclopedia, as I feel that this is an untapped ether of the fandom that needs to be expressed due to the demand here on Wiki by visitors. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 20:32, 16 July 2007 (CDT)
- Because a negligible fraction of articles aside (that nonetheless are more related to the canon than fan faction), our mission profile is to document the official material. Not fan fiction. And if we started that with one site, anyone could come and use this place as host for fan fiction. That said, what we can offer you is a link on Fan fiction to your own website. But no articles directly hosted here. --Serenity 11:45, 16 July 2007 (CDT)

Female Involvement / Relationships[edit]
Because I've been reading through the "Think Tank" "Female Involvement" thing and I'm not sure what steps are being taken to fix that: I read through the thing at "http://snurb.info/node/662" and it made some good points; there's no relatioship analysis, you type "queer" into the search engine, nothing comes up, etc. etc. (it was a pretty cool powerpoint presentation).....why not try to fix that? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by GuyIncognito (talk • contribs).
- Well, we have attempted to "fix" the problem, and the issue is that there's not a clear consensus on how to fix it (certainly not from the people who pointed it out in the first place), or a clear idea of what the problem is (other than we don't have a large amount of female contributors). As for the relationship analysis, I have no problem with analyzing character interactions, since character development is key to BSG (including the old one, though it never got as deep as it really could've been). With that said, I'd like to see what you have in mind. Do keep in mind though the analysis needs to be based on what we've seen and heard, appropriately cited, etc. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 20:32, 16 July 2007 (CDT)
- Yeah, what Joe said. It turned out largely to be a misunderstanding what this place, and a Wiki in general, is about. Our goal it to document sourced and actual BSG content, be it on screen or behind the scenes. Now, relationships can be a part of that, but this isn't a forum. It isn't a place for speculation, on who should go together with whom for example. Nothing against that, but there are forums for that. The homosexuality question is another good part. People can poke fun at Gaeta (in fact even the gag reels do), but there is nothing on screen to support it. So what can be written here? According to reports there will be homosexuality in "Razor", maybe putting this topic at rest for a bit.
- Of course it's valid to analyze relationships, and maybe more interesting than all the overly technical stuff, which I don't care that much about either, because I watch BSG for the characters too and not the ships or battles, which I really couldn't care less about. But again, it can't be speculation and needs to be sourced/cited. It can document what's seen on screen and analyze it; e.g. deriving motivations for certain actions. It could work as a subsection for an article maybe, detailing the way a character interacts with others. In this case romantically. That could also go some way of breaking out of the mode of just summarizing their actions in the episodes and moving towards some kind of personality profile.
- If you have any specific ideas on how to address the issue, you're welcome. --Serenity 04:30, 17 July 2007 (CDT)
Battlestar Alliance[edit]
well....I don't really know what the "original series" thing is going with; I mean I started watching for Helo. "Battlestar Alliance?" —The preceding unsigned comment was added by GuyIncognito (talk • contribs).
- Battlestar Alliance[1] is a fandom website...looks like it might be more of what you're looking for. BTW, please use the four tildes (~~~~)after your post to automatically sign it. --RUSnooky 21:19, 16 July 2007 (CDT)
- (reading through BA website)....wait I'm kinda new to online and I'm now sure how this works....Joe is the leader of the fandom (through the websites and stuff set up over there)...confused...—The preceding unsigned comment was added by GuyIncognito (talk • contribs).
- A few corrections: I'm not the leader of Battlestar Alliance, we have a leadership team, in addition to a leader which is selected from the leadership team every year. Right now, the leader of our Alliance is Shawn O'Donnell, who is the president of the Battlestar Fan Club. Also, not all that information (as well as the spit-and-polish) is up yet, because all my editing software is on my laptop, which needs its hard drive repaired. (I'm waiting for DiskWarrior so I can fix the HFS volume on my Mac.) I hope to have the website fully online by Friday or Saturday, depending on whether or not DW will fix my HDD.
- Right now, I'm using my desktop, which basically allows me to send emails and do basic wiki editing. My desktop doesn't have the software I use because I'm presently running Windows XP Media Center Edition and I have software for the Mac PowerBook G4... the desktop is something I mainly use to test out various operating systems and test drive programs I come across, when I have the time -- and the drive -- to do that sort of thing. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 21:38, 16 July 2007 (CDT)
- Wait...there's an official Battlestar Fan Club for Ron Moore or something? ...why take turns on a yearly basis if the show is ending after next year? and what's happening Friday or Saturday I really don't follow sorry... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by GuyIncognito (talk • contribs).
- There's a fan club for all the Battlestar Galactica series, including both the re-imagined and original series. As for Friday or Saturday, that'll be the day when the Battlestar Alliance site will officially be finished and go live, barring any real life interruptions. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 22:27, 16 July 2007 (CDT)
The Original Series and The New Series[edit]
....wait, so an original series website under this thing would have an equal vote to a current series' fansite? why? I mean they're about as similar as Ron Moore's show and like Buck Rodgers or something. Not that I mind the 70s show, it's just that I never saw it and all the BSG webrings I've seen didn't really seem to make mention of it. Why are you trying to incorporate them? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by GuyIncognito (talk • contribs).
- The original series is treated the same as the RDM version on this Wiki. While it's generally acknowledged that this WIki was originially started (correct me if I'm wrong Joe) because of the RDM version, we all recognize that TOS paved the way and had its great moments. Therefore, any TOS fandom site links are treated the same as the RDM fandom site links. If you'll peruse the Wiki, you'll see that there's an effort to bring as much info into it about TOS to try to bring it up to par with the volume of RDM articles.--RUSnooky 23:41, 16 July 2007 (CDT)
- The wiki was always meant to chronicle everything BSG, including the old series. It just happened that most of the early contributors worked mostly on RDM stuff. So generally speaking, you're correct. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 07:32, 17 July 2007 (CDT)
- what i've seen of the original series is that it was this silly star wars clone; how did that "pave the way" for the shipper fanfic we enjoy today? I mean Roslin isn't even in that other series. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by GuyIncognito (talk • contribs).
- Please remember to use the four tildes (~~~~) after your posts to sign them on comment pages. --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 07:18, 17 July 2007 (CDT)
- Actually, in the Original Series, Adama juggled three roles: spiritual leader, commander of Galactica, and leader/president of the Fleet. In the new series, what happened is that RDM decided to essentially split the character in keeping with how we do things in the United States. Thus he created a civilian president (Laura Roslin), who ends up becoming a spiritual leader / prophet of a kind, and Adama became solely a military guy, thus creating the dramatic tension seen throughout the first and second seasons.
- Also, shipper fanfic is nothing new to BSG as a whole: there's always been Sheba/Apollo, Cassie/Starbuck, Athena/Starbuck, and Starbuck/Apollo stories well before the new series even came into being. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 07:32, 17 July 2007 (CDT)
- ....is there a site that just covers stuff about the current series? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by GuyIncognito (talk • contribs).
- Sure, there are many news sites that only cover TNS. Naturally. But not such a comprehensive source of information as BSWiki. I don't really see where the problem is. You don't have to read the TOS stuff. For the most part it's kept apart from the TNS material. Some articles link to relevant TOS articles, but again, you are free to ignore that. The most common thing the two shows have for the purpose of Wiki reading, is that some articles have two or more versions for each series, making it necessary to use disambiguation pages. And when writing articles you need to pay attention to link to the correct ones. Like to Kobol (RDM) instead of just Kobol. That's all.
- And for the third or fourth time. Please sign your comments on talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). That will add your name and a time stamp. Otherwise there is no way to see who says what. Or you can just click on "sign your name" below the edit box. --Serenity 11:05, 17 July 2007 (CDT)
- As Serenity said, the TNS and TOS information on BS Wiki is pretty compartmentalized, meaning that they don't overflow into one another, unless some points of comparison or contrast need to be made. So, ultimately, what ends up happening is people can choose to read the TNS stuff without ever really having to read the TOS stuff, and vice versa. There are many TNS websites out there, but nothing as comprehensive as we have become when it comes to TNS material. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 07:17, 18 July 2007 (CDT)
