Lacy Rand is a student at the Athena Academy on Caprica, a private religious school. She and some of other bright students, including Ben Stark and Zoe Graystone, unknown to Lacy, share a secret belief with the school headmistress, Sister Clarice Willow to the monotheistic cult of one god.

Ben Stark, Zoe Graystone's boyfriend, along with Graystone and Rand board a Meglev subway train to run away from home with the intention to leave Caprica and settle on Gemenon, a colony that is particularly religious to live with new families. However, Lacy gets cold feet and does not board the train. Unknown to Lacy, Ben instead blows up the train and himself with a bomb, which results in the death of Zoe Graystone. Also on board were Shannon and Tamara Adams, wife and daughter to Joseph Adams whom they didn't know plus many others on the train. In grief she turns to Sister Willow for answers as she is angry at everything and suffers from survivor's guilt that she should had died on the train with them. She ask Willow who would do such a thing, not knowing it was Ben who triggered the bomb. She mentions to sister Willow that Zoe was a computer genius, which perks Willow's interest. Ostensibly as a way for Lacy to gain some solace and to reconnect with her friend, Sister Willow suggest that she find any work that Zoe was doing that Lacy could discover her friend in new ways. Taking heed of the Sister's advice, she visits Zoe-A, Zoe Graystone's Virtual Reality avatar online at Zoe's house in her old room under the pretext as told to Zoe's mother that she just wants to sit in her best friend's room. Amanda allows it believing she is helping Lacy to grieve for her best friend. There, Lacy puts on Zoe's Virtual Reality "glasses" and enters Zoe-A's inner sanctum. At first she is glad to see her friend but then momentarily rejects Zoe-A as to be not her friend or even to be real, that she is a "thing". However after seeing Zoe-A's genuine suffering (she somehow suffered severe sympathetic burn "injuries" at the same time the actual Zoe died in the bombing) and loneliness embraces her as a friend and hears her desire to be in the real world someday as Zoe Graystone promised (comforted, Zoe-A "injuries" miraculously heals). Lacy's secret meetings with the Doppelgänger Zoe in the real world of Zoe's room is discovered by Zoe's grieving father. Lacy takes Danial Graystone to meet his "daughter" in Virtual Reality. At first his reaction is the same as Lacy's but then the possibilities occur to him. From that Danial formulates a plan to bring Zoe-A into the real world as both want. Daniel, perhaps to preserve secrecy, then cuts off Lacy's contact with Zoe-A. After Zoe's father Daniel Graystone successfully downloads the avatar into a Cylon robot she calls Lacy for help.
