Battlestar Wiki talk:Quotes

Discussion page of Battlestar Wiki:Quotes

Nice work on this page, everyone! It will make it easier to get things set up in advance. Spencerian 10:55, 18 October 2005 (EDT)

I concur. Now it's time to start talking standardization. --Day 12:53, 18 October 2005 (EDT)

Please review Quotes list to avoid repetition

Now that Day and others have worked hard to form a locale where past quotes can be stored, please check this article before you add a quote. The darn "opening narrative" to the Mini-Series has been done at least 3 times now, and I think I'm hearing it in my dreams. Check online transcripts for some nifty quotes, and add away. Just remember that popular quotes, like Adama's announcement of the attack, Six's identity speech...they've been done. Find more unique ones before we start repeating. --Spencerian 13:10, 15 November 2005 (EST)

Too long

This page is quite long, and getting longer. Are people happy how it is, or should we have seperate pages for each month, or divide it some other way? --Undc23 07:04, 30 January 2006 (EST)

Having seperate pages for each month is probably the best. -- Joe Beaudoin 08:18, 30 January 2006 (EST)

Project Url

Instead of Quotes, shouldn't this be Battlestar_Wiki:Quotes with a shortcut of QOD? --Shane (T - C - E) 18:15, 20 March 2006 (CST)

Yes and no. I'll explain later... -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 13:08, 9 April 2006 (CDT)

Quotes namespace

I've implemented the "Quotes" namespace. Therefore, from now on, please use Quotes:04 9 instead of Template:Quote of the Day/04 9. (Of course, as a result, moves from the Template namespace for the current quotes are in order....) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 13:08, 9 April 2006 (CDT)

I moved the templates over to the Quotes namespace, and updates the main page to drive off of the new namespace as well. Should I we go ahead and delete the "quotes" templates now? --Steelviper 10:43, 14 April 2006 (CDT)
Yes, all quotes in the template namespace should be executed on sight. Whether by airlock or beheading, it doesn't matter to me. :-) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 10:53, 14 April 2006 (CDT)
Whoosh! Down the turboflush and out to wherever that goes. The template namespace is considerably tidier. --Steelviper 14:30, 14 April 2006 (CDT)

Is this really the optimum way of doing it? Couldnt we just make some kind of database and script to pull off a quote from a big list of them. Rather than having to manually set one up each day? Or is that not really in the spirit of a wiki? --Mercifull 18:23, 13 April 2006 (CDT)

I am one who who not want to touch the db. 2) it's on the template name space. Yikes! 3) It's the fun of the Wiki! :) --Shane (T - C - E) 18:40, 13 April 2006 (CDT)
I think these are all done now. All new quotes should now go in the Quotes namespace. --Shane (T - C - E) 22:13, 14 April 2006 (CDT)

April

I'm about to start April, which I expect may break the quotes on the main page briefly (though the redirect created by the "Move" may cover it). Either way, I'll update the main page to reference the quotes namespace after I'm done with April, and we'll be good. (And we'll just have to get the dates after April converted over to the Quotes namespace). --Steelviper 08:20, 14 April 2006 (CDT)

GJ Steel. :D --Shane (T - C - E) 22:12, 14 April 2006 (CDT)

Namespace Perk

Once of the nice things about the quotes being in their own namespace? They're easier to search. When checking to see if a quote is a duplicate entry, I just enter a key word, and do the advanced search, limiting the search to the quotes namespace. Any hits mean a possible duplicate, and no hits means I should be in the clear. Neat! I suppose it would also make searching the podcasts easier now that they have a namespace too (if anybody actually reads/searches those). --Steelviper 15:06, 21 April 2006 (CDT)

Correctness

shouldn't it be Quotations? quote is a verb. --Deadlygopher 07:56, 5 June 2006 (CDT)

The reason we don't add quotes is because it is already sperated and each character is identified at the begining of each line. --Shane (T - C - E) 08:06, 5 June 2006 (CDT)
He's talking about the project name. "Battlestar Wiki:Quotes" vs "Battlestar Wiki:Quotations". "Quote" to mean a quotation is an informal use of the word. --Steelviper 08:17, 5 June 2006 (CDT)
"Quotes" is valid in the English dictionary --Mercifull 09:14, 5 June 2006 (CDT)
Oops. :-P --Shane (T - C - E) 09:22, 5 June 2006 (CDT)

Season 3 Previews

This maybe a stretch, but would be proper to use quotes from the teaser and previews? Just an idea. Or save them for a lead up to the start of season. --FrankieG 23:18, 28 July 2006 (CDT)

Lead. --Shane (T - C - E) 11:55, 29 July 2006 (CDT)

Stats

Are done. Sp we can see we need some diverity. --Shane (T - C - E) 11:55, 29 July 2006 (CDT)

Moving Quotes

I have been thinking about moving some quotes from Oct., Nov. Dec into August and Sept preparing for the new season adding 3-4 quotes aweek. For me, it's because tedious to come up with good new quotes. Thoughts? I'm really sleepy on hope this makes sense. --FrankieG 20:51, 1 August 2006 (CDT)

TOS Quotes

I have some TOS quotes I like but can't figure which episode. Can anyone help? Thanks, --FrankieG 20:53, 1 August 2006 (CDT)

Yeah. If you post them, I can probably id the episode. --Steelviper 08:02, 2 August 2006 (CDT)

To Mix Up the Group

This thread over a the SciFi boards is making me crack up. The reason I post it here is because some of our posts need some livelness, and what they done is put the characters situations from the show, and replaced them with other quotse from other TV shows/movies. I gotta tell ya, these are really funny, and a few of them I would not mind putting in.

Leoben: Youre in a camp surrounded by Cylons, a human form Cylon is right in front of you with a detonator in his hand. What do you do?

Chief: Pop quiz hotshot, I already took the batteries..

Cally: Chief, theres something we forgot to tell you
Chief: What?
Cally: Dont cross the beams
Chief: Why not?
Cally: Trust me, it would be bad!
Chief: What do you mean "bad"?

"Speed" and "Ghostbusters" reference . Anyway, check it out. They are really funny. --Shane (T - C - E) 00:56, 1 September 2006 (CDT)

My problem is that the quotes aren't actual BSG quotes from the show, but parody. Further, this is essentially a generation of BSG fan fiction, which really should be kept separate and shouldn't appear on the main page. I wouldn't mind a fan fiction article of the funniest ones, but we need to keep our canonical and noncanonical well separated; some people may use the quotes section as a legitimate dialog reference, and doing this would screw that up. --Spencerian 18:04, 9 September 2006 (CDT)
I'd have to agree. Perhaps if the quote was somehow tagged as a "silly quote" then it would pass? -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 18:06, 9 September 2006 (CDT)
I agree to that. Each quote has scene assocated with it. I can't remmeber the current silly quote location, butthe TOP GUN, Spaceball , and The Ghostbuster quote (which has already shown) does have a scene associated with it even a mix of scenes. --Shane (T - C - E) 18:10, 9 September 2006 (CDT)
I dislike the idea of posting such "quotes" even when tagged. I am dismayed that one snuck by; I remember reading it and noting that I'd missed a rather obvious reference. I am completely opposed to dignifying mock quotes by inclusion on the main page. The key justification for our silly content is its segregation. --CalculatinAvatar(C-T) 21:32, 9 September 2006 (CDT)

Yeah, these need to be (at the very least) separated from the real quotes just to avoid confusion. Philwelch 04:18, 10 September 2006 (CDT)

Don't think that there was a consensus reach on this yet? --FrankieG 05:37, 10 September 2006 (CDT)
I have been getting confused also by the parody quotes. I would prefer if we stuck to only real ones. --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 10:05, 10 September 2006 (CDT)
I recognized the source of a fake quote, but I got confused about why it's there. I thought maybe someone was just fooling around or doing a prank.
At the very least they should be marked as parody, but I don't see the point of it on a Wiki. Such things belong on normal forums --Serenity 11:56, 11 September 2006 (CDT)
