Donna Lee Garrett, neé Funk (born 17 November 1942) is a stunt performer and actress, doubling for Robyn Douglass in the Galactica 1980 television series[1].

Garrett performed stunts in a variety of other genre productions from the 1960s through the 1990s, including Lost in Space (for June Lockhart[2], the mother of Anne Lockhart; Sheba from Battlestar Galactica), Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, TRON, and Ghostbusters II.

Personal Life

edit source

While studying for her major in physical education at L.A. Valley Junior College, Donna Funk met her future husband, Ralph Garrett at a rehearsal of "Homer Garrett's Why-Knot Twirlers" (Homer Garrett was Ralph's father). Ralph had been on leave from the U.S. Army at the time, and was coincidentally in attendance to the rehearsal: "I picked Donna out of a crowd of 40 and walked right up to her to dance." The future Mrs. Garrett also recalls that "The moment he walked in, I couldn't take my eyes off him. I thought I couldn't possibly catch a man like that."[3]

They married on 14 September 1964[4], and have two children, Damon (born 25 January 1971[5]) and Nicole (born 10 July 1973[6]).[3]

Their careers in Hollywood afforded them a five-bedroom house worth $75,000 USD, a motor-home, a camper, a speedboat and four motorcycles, per a December 1974 People magazine article. They reportedly invested in apartment buildings.[3]

Following the Garretts' marriage ceremony, Ralph Garrett received a job offer to work on Raquel Welch's A Swingin' Summer — at 6 A.M. on the first day of their honeymoon. While initially shocked at this, Donna Garrett was recruited the following day as a background performer. This kickstarted her career as a stunt performer, where her husband taught her about stunt work, while using her own training as a gymnast and diver.[3]

She quickly surpassed her husband as a performer; in 1974, she averaged six months worth of work a year, while her husband averaged only half that.[3]

Her career lead to parts into films of note, particularly Earthquake (1974) along side 141 stunt performers[7], The Poseidon Adventure (1972) alongside 41 stunt performers[8], Logan's Run (1976) as well as a variety of films doubling for Raquel Welch[2].

In Galactica 1980, Garrett worked as the stunt double for Robyn Douglass, and Douglass' contracts later stipulated that Garrett perform any stunts in her productions[1], including the TV movie "Her Life as a Man."

She is also known for her stunt work portraying "Bambi" in the 1971 James Bond film Diamonds are Forever, a role portrayed by Lola Larson. While both performers were uncredited in the film, Garrett is believed to be responsible for the stunts where Bambi fights Sean Connery's Bond.[2]

Garrett's career concluded in 1995, having worked in two different Star Trek's as a stunt performer that nearly bookend her credits of over 30 years: the Original Series' "The Cloud Minders" and The Next Generation's "Yesterday's Enterprise." For "Yesterday's Enterprise," she performed the stunts for the character of "Rachel Garrett," and can be seen when the bridge explodes leading to that character's death.

Biography

Early Life and Education

edit source

Soares was raised in Richmond, British Columbia, where she attended Palmer and Steveston secondary schools.[1] She was involved in band and choir during her youth, but did not begin acting until late in high school when she participated in the yearly school show.[2] As a teenager, she also became involved in community theatre, borrowing her father's car to perform in shows in New Westminster and Burnaby.[1]

After graduating from high school, Soares attended the University of British Columbia (UBC), initially intending to pursue a practical degree rather than theatre.[3] She began as a French major while taking theatre electives, and by the end of her undergraduate studies had completed a double major in theatre and French.[4]

Following her undergraduate degree, Soares attended Studio 58, a professional theatre training program at Langara College in Vancouver.[5] She appreciated the program's strong connections to Vancouver's professional theatre community, noting that directors and artistic directors working in the field taught at the school, allowing students to build professional networks before graduation.[6] By the time she graduated from Studio 58, Soares had already secured her first professional booking.[7]

Soares has built an extensive theatre career in Vancouver and across Canada. She has been particularly associated with Theatre Replacement, working with co-founder and artistic director Maiko Yamamoto, who has been instrumental in developing Soares as an artist.[8]

Her theatre credits include productions of Kuroko (vAct), China Doll (Gateway Theatre), Nassim (Bush Theatre), four runs of Salmon Girl in British Columbia and Ontario (Raven Spirit Dance), The Enemy (Firehall Arts Centre), and King of the Yees (Gateway Theatre and a tour to the National Arts Centre).[9] She also performed in The Drowning Girls at Vertigo Theatre, earning a Betty Mitchell Award nomination for Ensemble Performance.[10]

Other notable productions include Half Life (Theatre NorthWest), Green Lake (Solo Collective – Jessie nomination for Supporting Actress), Benefit (Downstage), Cock (Rumble), and Cinderella: An East Van Panto (Theatre Replacement).[11] Soares has identified Cock, a three-person play with no props that required her to perform with an English accent, as particularly memorable and challenging.[12] She noted that the role was significant as it represented a shift in the industry, with casting directors beginning to hire performers who looked like her for roles previously unavailable to them.[13]

At the Shaw Festival, Soares appeared in Snow in Midsummer, The Orphan of Chao, Village Wooing, Blithe Spirit, Everybody, Too True To Be Good, Sherlock Holmes and The Raven's Curse, Shawground (2021), and Fairground (2021).[14]

Like many theatre performers, Soares has supplemented her acting income with other work. She has worked at several Richmond community centres to maintain financial stability while pursuing her theatrical career.[15]

Television and Film

edit source

Soares has appeared in numerous television series, often in recurring or guest-starring roles. Her television credits include Riverdale, The Flash (as Judge Tanaka), The Baby-Sitters Club, Supernatural, The Magicians, and Virgin River (as ER Doc #1).[16]

She appeared in three episodes of Stargate Atlantis as Dr. Coleman in "Tao of Rodney," "Submersion," and "First Strike," appearing alongside Battlestar Galactica actors Leela Savasta and Heather Doerksen. She also appeared in an episode of The 4400 titled "The New World" as an NTAC Medical Nurse,[17] working with Battlestar Galactica actors Samantha Ferris and Kavan Smith.

Additional television credits include Arrow, Timeless (as Military Doctor), Psych (as Officer), Once Upon a Time, Mistresses, Witches of East End, Continuum, Smallville, and The Andromeda Strain (as Korean Nurse).[18]

Battlestar Galactica

edit source

Soares portrayed the Gemenon Delegate (credited as "Speaking Delegate #1") in five episodes of the Re-imagined Series during Season 4.[19] Her character served as the representative from Gemenon on the Quorum of Twelve following the Second Exodus.

Personal Life

edit source

In a 2021 interview, Soares expressed her career goal of landing a recurring role onime on set to learn how different production roles interact, noting that her previous film and television work had consisted mainly of single-day appearances.[20] During the COVID-19 pandemic, she taught herself Korean, went for walks, and practiced yoga to stay grounded during the theatre industry shutdown.[21]
