Discussion page of Battlestar Wiki:Think Tank/Episode airdate information

Usage in episode articles[edit]

How did you picture the episode articles thing? Were you going to use {{Maelstrom NTSC broadcast date}} (which has been done BTW, I've been contributing to this project before it even existed) in Maelstrom? --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 04:31, 3 May 2007 (CDT)

It was my bad I didn't realise that Maelstrom existed so i have changed it. It was only to serve a point anyway not an example of a change. I think you are a little confused on what exactly I'm trying to do here. Its an overhaul of the current system not something completely new. And you can see how i did the channel logo by looking at the code. --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 05:30, 3 May 2007 (CDT)

Integration into {{Episode Data}}[edit]

Could be integrated automatically :-) Shane (T - C - E) 05:03, 3 May 2007 (CDT)

That's what I was getting at in my previous comment. We just use Template:PAGENAME NTSC broadcast date, really. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 05:19, 3 May 2007 (CDT)
I would like to see mockups for ideas, but I think the "date" in the template would need to be shorter. Shane (T - C - E) 05:23, 3 May 2007 (CDT)
How short would you want the date to be? --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 05:30, 3 May 2007 (CDT)
Also it couldn't be added automatically because there are some episodes with the same name as a TOS episode or like the Pegasus episode also shares its name with other pages. --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 05:48, 3 May 2007 (CDT)
Nope. The title paramater can force it to be changed, and I can add a dismb parameter that only works on the release date section. Shane (T - C - E) 18:59, 3 May 2007 (CDT)
For example, look at the table header for, e.g., The Hand of God (RDM) or Resistance (episode). --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 01:09, 4 May 2007 (CDT)

Example of use on page[edit]

See Crossroads, Part II for how a template would look on the page. --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 05:37, 3 May 2007 (CDT)

Included US airdate template too. --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 05:47, 3 May 2007 (CDT)
Looks good. However, I am wondering if we should include all the "format" release dates. Make it a "2 by 2" table (4 cells) and label them accordingly. lol. Alot of this would be automated in the template itself of course. Shane (T - C - E) 07:56, 3 May 2007 (CDT)
I'm not the template expert lol but remember that these templates are used on the image tags for the episodes too arnt they? --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 08:36, 3 May 2007 (CDT)

Usage note[edit]

Please note that I created these templates for use in the image templates. The NTSC broadcast date has been, but need not always be a US airdate, and the PAL broadcast date has been, but need not be the UK airdate. The fancy formatting, which looks nice in episode templates, is not helpful within the image templates are originally intended. Also, non-anglosphere broadcast dates should be included where possible. --Peter Farago 14:29, 3 May 2007 (CDT)

I agree. Maybe we should just have one "airdate" field in {{Episode Data}} and include every airdate from anywhere in the world we can find. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 01:23, 4 May 2007 (CDT)
That would probably be the best solution, all around. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 05:03, 4 May 2007 (CDT)

Peter's Idea[edit]

Just so it's out there.. his suggestion is that we rename the template(s) (Category:RDM_Release_Date_Templates and Category:RDM_Broadcast_Date_Templates) to have the county code in it, so we can display all the airtime for the particular episodes. {{Episode Airtime Data}} is the template that "shows" all the data -- plus it's sub-templates -- and {{Episode Release Date}} is the template that formats out the template itself. In the long run, I will be able to migrate this over to the Media wiki and the {{Episode Airtime Data}} box would be migrated over inside the Template:Master screencap and Template:Master audio. An area of example is over on my sub testing page.. here. Shane (T - C - E) 15:48, 4 May 2007 (CDT)

For the Media wiki I created a test "template" master" of Template:Master screencap that uses the {{Episode Airtime Data}} boxes. Please check it out. Remember... it still needs to be refined and we still need to think about the renaming process of adding the country code. Shane (T - C - E) 10:58, 7 May 2007 (CDT)
Looks good. The only suggestion I have to make is that you make the main headers US, UK and Other, and make DE, NL, etc. children of Other. Especially for people using Shane's JS (with the Show/Hide thingies) this'll prevent a lot of clutter. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 15:20, 8 May 2007 (CDT)

Status?[edit]

What's the sit rep on this? Need more discussions or can we vote? -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 09:26, 7 June 2007 (CDT)

I'd still like to collect all possible airdates (not only DE, but also AU, NZ, NL, etc.) and group them under the "Other airdates" header, which is (IMO) much better than cluttering up the main view with four extra headers. To illustrate this graphically:
Hmm, nesting collapsible navboxes doesn't seem to work very well, I'll see if I can fix that.
If there are no objections, I'd like implement this method of airdate showing for all countries BSG has aired in or is currently airing in. Of course, if an episode hasn't been aired in NL yet, the NL header won't show up. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 09:43, 7 June 2007 (CDT)
Well, since this an English language Wiki, I'd prefer if we sticked to English-language broadcasts. That means US, UK, NZ, AUS, CAN. For the others, there are either own BSWiki editions or they have localized websites elsewhere. Except maybe for people from subbing countries like the Netherlands, as those are more inclined to visit an English Wiki than people from dubbing countries. --Serenity 09:51, 7 June 2007 (CDT)
The major point here is that NL doesn't have an own wiki. My suggestion would be to include non-English countries only if they don't have their own wiki. On a side note, I've managed to fix the nested collapsible table issue. I've asked Joe to merge my fix with the site's JavaScript, so it'll work for everyone. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 10:50, 7 June 2007 (CDT)
Hence my caveat to only include subbing countries. People from dubbing countries that don't have an own Wiki (Italy maybe) are far more likely to look at an external website for that information. There is a huge "Hurrr. I need to have everything in my language" thing going on there, even with people who know enough English to read a website. --Serenity 10:55, 7 June 2007 (CDT)

N.B.: A Kiwi recently posted on BW:AN, asking for airdates for New Zealand. --Spencerian 12:25, 7 June 2007 (CDT)

I noticed, that's why I mentioned NZ as well. It'll be quite some work, though, to add historical airdates. Ploughing through old revisions of BBattlestar Wiki:News/Airdates and BW:TV would probably be the best approach. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 12:33, 7 June 2007 (CDT)
