Alcalá's first major break came in 1991 when he guest directed on an episode of ABC's short lived but popular drama Homefront. Since then he has guest directed on a vast number of series including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, ER and House.
In 2006 he directed the third and fourth episodes of Battlestar Galactica's Season 3, titled "Exodus, Part I" and "Exodus, Part II".

Alcalá also co-produced the 2006 made for television movie Walkout, based upon the true story of Paula Crisostomo, a Mexican-American Student Activist who fights the anti-mexican bias in the American educational system. This feature was, coincidentally, directed by Edward James Olmos.
