Shane, can you pretty please fix the Star and Crew templates please. the Character box seemed to work fine by lightening the name but the others arnt quite right. If you could look into it, that would be great. cheers. --[[User:Mercifull|Mercifull]] ([[User talk:Mercifull|Talk]]/[[Special:Contributions/Mercifull|Contribs]]) 07:57, 14 February 2007 (CST)

== Episodes Smaller characters have starred in ==
Hello.

Reason I Showed the episodes that Leoben had starred in was because i've got about 10 friends that keep asking everybody "what episode did number 3 star in where she did such and such" and etc. So I figured it would be convienent for me to go ahead and list the episodes Leoben had starred in. Is this ok Shane? I mean I think it helps as it dosen't hurt the page. I'll do it for all the guest stars like the cylons too if you want. --[[User:Darth Tytis|Darth Tytis]] 23:34, 14 February 2007 (CST)
I come to you because I need your help. I started to update the french part of the wiki, to translate various pages from the english one, to import templates the french wiki didn't use yet etc etc. I noticed you were looking for somebody to manage the french wiki. I do not exactly know what it'd be about, but let's say I'm quite interested in this.
:I feel asleep in front of my computer. Pardon for my delay. I suggest a "Table Matrix" then. [[List of character appearances (RDM)]]. Sorta how our "[[List of pilots]]" page work. Character pages, clearly stated in [[BW:SAC]] should not carry this information. If you want I can help, but I think it's a great idea. You might want to even suggest a "Last Seen" field for the {{tl|Character Data}} template. Sounds Great. I'll start working on it tommorow. Thanks!  And also, I had posted in the think tank a link to a proposal of mine to creat some sort of rating system to were each fan of the show that comes here can rate there favorite episodes. Does that sound cool? --[[User:Darth Tytis|Darth Tytis]] 23:47, 14 February 2007 (CST)
The reason of my message is simple. I updated the Episode List (not the template, only the wikipage) and had to do some modifications, involving accents, missing or useless capital letters, and special letters. I think i'm done, however these modifications broke several links to episode pages.
:Yep. I already posted something on it's talk page. Check it out. :-) [[User:Shane|Shane]] ([[User_Talk:Shane|T]] - [[Special:Contributions/Shane|C]] - [[Special:Editcount/Shane|E]]) 23:48, 14 February 2007 (CST)

One last thing, I had to tell you but i've gone through the tutorials about editing and stuff and I'm still having trouble creating different sections like you did on the pilots page. If you want you can do them but i'll do the best I can. {{unsigned|Darth Tytis}}
I know it is possible to hide them on screen, but that would not be quite clean, that's why I tried to rename the pages who needed it... unsuccessfully, since I'm not allowed to do it. Could you please grant me the correct permissions, so that I could rename the pages with a correct typography ? Afterwoods, when there is no more broken links on the "episode list" wiki page, I shall update de "episode list" template page, and the episode infoboxes.
:I never worked on the pilots page. I'll get it started, and you can help out. This is always a team effort. Practice makes perfection and if you fail, '''''"try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, again." -- Some [[MemoryAlpha:Star Trek|Star Trek]] Episode''''' as we don't care. :-) Always revertible. Hi Shane.<br/>Just two questions for the moment.
* Can you give me all the hexa code for the colors you use for the wiki?
* Is it possible to disable or to show me the way to disable the automatic uppercase of the first letter of each word on the article title please?
Thank you very much. --[[User:LIMAFOX76|LIMAFOX76]] 16:22, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Has the respect and admiration for Admiral Adama been decreasing ever since his speech in "Unfinished Business"?
:Hi, Shane, thanks for [[Battlestar_Wiki:Chiefs'_noticeboard/Archive8#Capitalized_Headlines|fixing this]] for the German version (it works); sorry I didn't notice earlier, since I wasn't active for a while. Perhaps it would be a good idea to drop this transformation alltogether...
:@LIMAFOX: You can create a personal stylesheet in your profile which applies this change. (for German, it looked ''very'' wrong because this language has quite elaborate rules about uppercase first letters; but I didn't intend to discuss anglo-saxon habits). --[[User:Bruno-the-questionable|Tobias]] 19:32, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

I put this down mainly because of his speech in Unfinished Business and In the Day of the Life.  The latter episode had in a moment when his late wife told him that he had gotten better at ignoring the hushes and the stares as he walks down the corridors.  This seemed totally in contrast to the admiration that was very apparent at the beginning of the series and the loyalty that many of the officers displayed towards him.  The new episode Dirty Job seems to reveal that there has been some dissolving of his admiration by the crew.  Anyhows, those were my arguements for that question and did not consider it fan wanking.  If that question could be considered that, than many other questions after "Unfinished Business" should be removed as they keep on noting how Adama seems to have gone back on his speech.  --[[User:LifeStar|LifeStar]] 10:26, 26 February 2007 (CST)

== Population comparison in Episode Data template ==
Hi, I've recently joined Wikia and started adding to the [http://matrix.wikia.com Matrix wiki], where I noticed that you'd [http://matrix.wikia.com/wiki/Talk:Main_Page#CSS.2FStyle_Design posted] to the main talk page about a new style design.

I saw you messing around in your [[User:Shane/Testing Area 2|testing area]] and noticed your template throws an error when ''oldpopulation'' is undefined or empty. I took the liberty to make a fix for this, and I set up a demonstration thingy for FotP through Resurrection Ship II (conveniently, they include all four possible cases: no previous count, increase, decrease and no change). I put it up [[User:Catrope/Testing Template|here]]. --[[User:Catrope|Catrope]] 04:58, 1 March 2007 (CST)
The skin at the moment is terrible, but as I've only ever really had experience altering the content of articles in wikis I have no starting point to alter it (the internal help is pretty limited at the moment too). I'm familiar with CSS and web design etc. so if you point me in the right direction I should be able to improve it, but if you're still willing to help with the style that would be more awesome still.
:I setup a var in the [[Template:Population compare]] itself. No need for your fix. [[User:Shane|Shane]] ([[User_Talk:Shane|T]] - [[Special:Contributions/Shane|C]] - [[Special:Editcount/Shane|E]]) 09:11, 1 March 2007 (CST)

I want to start playing with tag clouds again so is it possible to get hold of a database dump of the Wiki? == Production numbers and episode titles ==

The production numbers listed for each of the third season episode is 100% wrong.

What is listed is a sequence number, not a production number.  Here are the production numbers:

39.  3- 1  03001  (T2701)      6 Oct 06  Occupation
40.  3- 2  03002  (T2702)      6 Oct 06  Precipice
41.  3- 3  03003A (T2703A)    13 Oct 06  Exodus, Pt 1
42.  3- 4  03003B (T2703B)    20 Oct 06  Exodus, Pt 2
43.  3- 5  03004  (T2704)    27 Oct 06  Collaborators
44.  3- 6  03005  (T2705)      3 Nov 06  Torn
45.  3- 7  03006  (T2706)    10 Nov 06  A Measure of Salvation
46.  3- 8  03007  (T2707)    17 Nov 06  Hero
47.  3- 9  03008  (T2708)      1 Dec 06  Unfinished Business
48.  3-10  03009  (T2709)      8 Dec 06  The Passage
49.  3-11  03010  (T2710)    15 Dec 06  The Eye of Jupiter
50.  3-12  03011  (T2711)    21 Jan 07  Rapture
51.  3-13  03012  (T2712)    28 Jan 07  Taking a Break from All Your Worries
52.  3-14  03013  (T2713)    11 Feb 07  The Woman King
53.  3-15  03014  (T2714)    18 Feb 07  A Day in the Life
54.  3-16  03015  (T2715)    25 Feb 07  Dirty Hands
55.  3-17  03016  (T2716)      4 Mar 07  Maelstrom
56.  3-18  03017  (T2717)    11 Mar 07  The Son Also Rises
57.   3-19  03018  (T2718)    18 Mar 07  Crossroads, Part 1
58.  3-20  03019  (T2719)    25 Mar 07  Crossroads, Part 2

Until today's episode, I couldn't be sure about the T27nn numbers.  Those appear to be a different control number, which might be related to the Comcast versions.

The 301 → 319 numbers are listed as "episode" numbers on the tape slate.  The 030nn numbers are the "production" numbers.

The other mistake is related to the episode titles.  You are using "I" and "II" for the two-part episodes.  The correct titles, for accuracy, are shown above.  Those are the titles as given on the master tapes. {{unsigned|Vidiot}}

:The writers, especially RDM, generally refer to "Occupation" and "Precipice" as one episode, thus shortening the season to 19 episodes. But pretty much everyone else counts them as two episodes. Whether that split is there or in "Exodus", doesn't really matter IMO. We are also under no obligation to follow supposedly official naming conventions with something as trivial as numbers. Personally I think roman numerals look better. --[[User:Serenity|Serenity]] 14:03, 25 March 2007 (CDT)

::Maybe I am under a very misquided impression, but it is my understanding that Wiki's are supposed to be a source of '''accurate facts'''.  Incorrect episode numbering and titles does not fit the definition of accurate facts.

::As for RDM and the writers considering the first two titles as one episode; that will have to be worked out between them and NBC/Universal, which assigns the official production numbers.  As to why ''Exodus'' was given a single production number (with A and B suffexes) and ''Crossroads'' two unique production numbers is unknown.  You'll have to take that up with, yep, NBC/Universal.  I can only report as to what I know as the facts, only the facts.

::To you, the I and II might look better, but to NBC/Universal and/or RDM and/or the writers, the 1 and 2 was preferred.  What gives you, or anyone for that matter, the right to change the title.  For example, the book/movie ''The Color Purple''. If this title were listed on a British site, one might be tempted to change the title to ''The Colour Purple''.  But that would be effectively changing the title of the book.  Yes, it would be the British spelling, but the book/movie isn't British.

::I would hope that the owners of this Wiki would also want to provide the facts and only the facts. [[User:Vidiot|Vidiot]] 14:46, 25 March 2007 (CDT)

:::We aren't changing the title. We are talking about the way a number is written, for Pete's sake! It doesn't make a difference whether we use roman or arabic numerals. The title is still effectively the same. --[[User:Serenity|Serenity]] 15:39, 25 March 2007 (CDT)
:::If you insist, we can make [[Exodus, Pt 1]], [[Exodus, Pt 2]], etc. redirect to the appropriate page. As for the production numbers, we can change the text "Production number:" to "Sequence number:", and we'd be fine, wouldn't we? BTW, would you happen to know what the "T27" part means?--[[User:Catrope|Catrope]]([[User talk:Catrope|Talk to me]] or [[Special:Emailuser/Catrope|e-mail me]]) 15:45, 25 March 2007 (CDT)
::::We already have "Episode number" at the top of the template. "Sequence number" is kinda redundant then. I didn't realize the main problem earlier, and Vidiot does have a point in this case. But then, I'm for deleting it altogether. Even noting the real production numbers used behind the scenes isn't that useful IMO. --[[User:Serenity|Serenity]] 15:52, 25 March 2007 (CDT)
:::::Not really, no. I say we throw out the production number as it's redundant anyway. Maybe call a vote on the template's talk page?--[[User:Catrope|Catrope]]([[User talk:Catrope|Talk to me]] or [[Special:Emailuser/Catrope|e-mail me]]) 16:03, 25 March 2007 (CDT)
:::The ''extremely minor'' Roman vs. Arabic numerals issue aside (an issue easily rectified by redirects), the production number thing concerns me. A question that no one has sought fit to ask is '''what is/are the source(s) of these numbers'''?
:::Also, speaking of the Arabic vs. Roman numeral argument provided here, I've taken the liberty to refer to David Bassom's official companions for both Season 1 and Season 2. In the books, roman numerals are used in the episode titles. (i.e. "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I" is written as "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I"). -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 16:22, 25 March 2007 (CDT)
:::The reason the production numbers are like this, is because it works in conjunction with the SciFi site when we link to the official summaries. The production numbers you give are cast/crew sheets and are "expanded" based on script readings. As for the name I do agree we have a little inconsistency, for the miniseries we have [[Miniseries, Night 1]] and [[Miniseries, Night 2]] but for the episodes them selfs we have roman numerals. Right now since, the avg. user has zero access to the script cast/crew calling sheets on the web (i.e. special access to IMDB Pro). I rather have everything "consistent" to what the avg. person sees. Yes we have Crew/Cast visiting this wiki (I talk with them all the time), but I am sure they don't care. '''Plus''' the universal language in this world is mathematics and keep roman numberlers is better imo. [[User:Shane|Shane]] ([[User_Talk:Shane|T]] - [[Special:Contributions/Shane|C]] - [[Special:Editcount/Shane|E]]) 16:38, 25 March 2007 (CDT)

OK, here goes.  My responses to all of the above new stuff will be done here.

As to the titles from the 1st and 2nd seasons, as listed in the two books, I have no clue what the author was using as a source and if he did change it to romans from the official paperwork.  I do not have access to anything to say otherwise.  Only this season do I have access to information that does provide some path to the official source.  It is entirely possible that the department that put the tapes together type "Part 1" instead of "Part I".  It is the only official documentation that I currently have.  I suppose one could always ask RDM, since he obviously has access to official doumentation.

That same information is the source of the the production numbers, which is:

The 2nd image of each group is from the tape slate of the tape that was fed.  I'd have to pull the DVD-ROMs of the previous episodes to show the pattern.

Early on, GDMX fed both Canada and Comcast.  After the break, the Comcast feeds were no more.  I believe that the T27nn numbers are an internal number for the Comcast edits (which contained promos for NBC programming).  The satellite feed slates were never modified to contain the NBC/Universal official show production number until recently.

As to Shane's comment (which I just now saw), call sheets might not necessarily have the NBC/Universal production number on them.  The ones for Paramount Star Trek shows did (the ones from ST:TNG onward).  They might only have the episode number, which is one less than the sequence number ('Exodus' being 303A and 303B).  I do not know NBC/Universal's format without seeing a copy of a callsheet.

The Wiki is supposed to contain facts.  A production number listing is supposed to be just that, the official production number assigned by the studio.  Putting up a sequence number and calling it a production number is inaccurate.  If you are still not sure that what I have provided is correct, I say that the production number listing be removed until paperwork can be obtained from NBC/Universal.

I just looked at Sci-Fi's web site and they have 'CROSSROADS - PT 2', i.e., arabic, not roman.  Six of one, half dozen of the other. [[User:Vidiot|Vidiot]] 17:28, 25 March 2007 (CDT)

I'd like to help with the french wiki, but I'm having trouble with the episode names. Since [[User:RasputinAXP|RasputinAXP]] doesn't seem to be there really, we would need additional help with the wiki (i.e. setting up some conventions on how to quote episode names for example).--[[User:Moo|Moo]] 14:39, 9 April 2007 (CDT)

You are clear to let loose the bot on changing [[Thirteenth Tribe]] to [[Thirteenth Tribe (RDM)]]; I've done the TOS links and made a list of pages that intentionally link the disambig page. ::::You mean you actually run the bot at your home PC and it just uses the HTTP interface to MediaWiki? Then you probably use [[Special:Search]], and you'd have to use a URL like "http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Special:Search?ns0=1&ns1=1&ns2=1&ns3=1&ns4=1&ns5=1&ns6=1&ns7=1&ns8=1&ns9=1&ns10=1&ns11=1&ns12=1&ns13=1&ns14=1&ns15=1&ns100=1&ns101=1&ns102=1&ns103=1&ns104=1&ns105=1&ns106=1&ns107=1&redirs=1&search=earth&searchx=Search". Although the namespace numbers vary on a per-Wiki basis, you can still automate it by parsing the HTML you get from the Special:Search page. Anyway, the bot I'm considering to write would operate on the server side and interact directly with the MediaWiki DB, making it a little more dangerous (it could theoretically frak up the DB if badly written) but allowing many more options to be implemented much easier. Finding all articles in all namespaces containing '<nowiki>[[Earth]]</nowiki>' could by done with a simple SELECT query. --[[User:Catrope|Catrope]]([[User talk:Catrope|Talk to me]] or [[Special:Emailuser/Catrope|e-mail me]]) 08:40, 17 April 2007 (CDT)

Request

Hello.

The reason of my message is simple. I updated the Episode List (not the template, only the wikipage) and had to do some modifications, involving accents, missing or useless capital letters, and special letters. I think i'm done, however these modifications broke several links to episode pages.

Thank you.

Alvine

Issues with Wiki Frakr

Hi Shane! Happy holidays to you and yours, I hope all is well ...

Colors and First letter of title in uppercase

Hi Shane.
Just two questions for the moment.

  • Can you give me all the hexa code for the colors you use for the wiki?
  • Is it possible to disable or to show me the way to disable the automatic uppercase of the first letter of each word on the article title please?

Thank you very much. --LIMAFOX76 16:22, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Shane, thanks for fixing this for the German version (it works); sorry I didn't notice earlier, since I wasn't active for a while. Perhaps it would be a good idea to drop this transformation alltogether...
@LIMAFOX: You can create a personal stylesheet in your profile which applies this change. (for German, it looked very wrong because this language has quite elaborate rules about uppercase first letters; but I didn't intend to discuss anglo-saxon habits). --Tobias 19:32, 26 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

The Matrix Wiki Skin

Hi, I've recently joined Wikia and started adding to the Matrix wiki, where I noticed that you'd posted to the main talk page about a new style design.

I'm not thinking anything too fancy, just a plain black background, green text and so on, but with an animated gif of the falling matrix code on either side of the page to really make a good impression.

Please reply either here or on my talk page there if you've got the time. Cheers --xensyria 17:09, 28 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
