Welcome to Battlestar Wiki!

Welcome to the Wiki, Veepz. Tell us about yourself on your user page. We have a template that lets you put some information about yourself in a nice-looking box.

Battlestar Wiki is an encyclopedia on officially-licensed stories, aired episodes, and other products of the Battlestar universes. Make sure that your contributions fit Battlestar Wiki's purpose, avoiding what we aren't.

Our editing standards and conventions policies may differ from other wikis, especially in verb tense and voice, capitalization and the like. Please read this policy. We have an editing tutorial and wiki markup codes to help you.

Our policies on original research differ from places such as Wikipedia. We allow some research based on aired episode content, but don't allow speculation that isn't supported from episode events.

Battlestar Wiki's many projects help improve our content. Are you an Original Series fan? Help out in the Original Series Article Project. Non-English versions of Battlestar Wiki also need contributors, and helpers for our podcast transcriptions are also welcome. New projects should be brought to our Think Tank, where we hash out large-scale ideas before implementing them.

Any questions about an article can be entered on the article's talk page. General questions about the wiki can be brought to the Quorum or the administrators' noticeboard. To sign your posts on any talk page, just enter four tildes (~~~~)!

We look forward to your contributions to the community! --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 02:57, 30 June 2007 (CDT)

Podcast transcription

Welcome to the transcribers' guild ;). I see you've taken up on transcribing Podcast:A Day in the Life Bonus, and you're observing the rules quite well. Please read BW:POD#Standards if you haven't already. It describes our rules for podcast transcription (most of which you've already picked up on) and links to a useful application that makes transcribing easier. Thanks for helping out. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 05:48, 2 July 2007 (CDT)

Image Upload

I need some help.:\ I would like to use pictures(from IMDb) of actors to put on their articles instead of using the pictures of their BSG characters. I am having trouble finding out how to do this. Any help will be greatly appreciated! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Veepz (talk • contribs).

You need to go over to the Media repository, create an account there (it can be the same as your user name here) and upload the pictures that way. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 13:06, 10 July 2007 (CDT)
You need to register at our Media Wiki and then you can upload pictures here. Then you can link to them like this: Image:pic.jpg. Double brackets in normal articles, none in the templates. A more advanced guide is available here --Serenity 13:09, 10 July 2007 (CDT)
Got it, thanks.Veepz 13:17, 10 July 2007 (CDT)

Capitalization for "Marines"

Just wondering, before I make changes... In order to make the articles in this Wiki consistent with each other, when is the word 'marine' suppose to be capitalized and vice versa? Many articles capitalize the word in sentences. i.e. "...escorted by Marines". Others do not. Which is proper?--Veepz 15:35, 22 July 2007 (CDT)

Marines is typically capitalized, as far as I know, since it's more or less a proper name. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 15:37, 22 July 2007 (CDT)
Alright. Thanks Joe. :)Veepz 15:54, 22 July 2007 (CDT)

On RFA voting

To clarify Joe's comment in case it was confusing, anyone with a user account 30 days and older can vote. For you, that time is July 30, one month after your account creation. In future RFAs, you can vote immediately. --Spencerian 00:41, 24 July 2007 (CDT)

Noted, thanks Spence. --Veepz 07:08, 24 July 2007 (CDT)
Sorry if I was confusing. :-) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 17:15, 24 July 2007 (CDT)
It's okay. You weren't confusing anyhow. BW:RFA explained things well. :) --Veepz 19:41, 24 July 2007 (CDT)
Great! :-) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 19:54, 24 July 2007 (CDT)

Note on capitalization (maybe it's just me)

Not sure how others feel about this. We use "Re-imagined Series" as proper noun, and that's correct. However, when you say "re-imagined Battlestar Galactica", you use it as adjective. In that case it should stay lowercase IMHO. Though I see that it appears somewhat inconsistent and nitpicky. --Serenity 16:16, 24 July 2007 (CDT)

My first goal for this wiki was to make it more consistent, the 'little' things. I guess because they stand out to me when I read. Sorry if I'm doing things incorrectly, and thank you for pointing them out. I've always thought "Re-imagined Series" should be capitlized per BW:SAC(doesn't it look neater too? :P that's irrelevant anyway), but I do see where you're coming from. I will go back and revise if no other opinions are expressed. -- Veepz 19:44, 24 July 2007 (CDT)
And "Re-imagined Series" is correct. It's just "Re-imagined Battlestar Galactica" that's the issue here. :) --Serenity 05:37, 25 July 2007 (CDT)
I have to agree with Serenity; the issue with "Re-imagined Series" is that it's basically a proper noun for "re-imagined Battlestar Galactica", thus the "re-imagined" before Battlestar Galactica should never be capitalized. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 19:53, 24 July 2007 (CDT)
Okay! That takes care of that. :-) -- Veepz 19:57, 24 July 2007 (CDT)
How about here? If "Re-imagined" comes after "Battlestar Galactica", as "Battlestar Galactica Re-imagined Series" -- Veepz 20:09, 24 July 2007 (CDT)
That looks grammatically weird. The purpose of having "Re-imagined Series" is to avoid having to type in "Battlestar Galactica" all the time, as well as being a way to differentiate from the Original Series (which follows the same rule). Since we are a wiki on Battlestar, typing the title is a bit redundant and confusing, so I'd recommend using only "Re-imagined Series" or "Original Series" in most cases. --Spencerian 02:08, 25 July 2007 (CDT)

Curiosity

I'm quite curious. What is the purpose of 's(see the edit box)? Is it something more than just apostrophe S... Or not? -- Veepz 15:41, 31 July 2007 (CDT)

Exactly where in the edit box do you see that? Anyway, it's probably to prevent the single quote from being seen as part of wiki markup (as in ''Galactica'''s, which sometimes gives problems). --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 16:01, 31 July 2007 (CDT)
I'm talking about & # 39 ;s, without the spaces. If you look at, for example, Noel Allison and click on 'edit'. In the edit box there is the whole & 39 s thing in place of the 's. Your explanation does make sense though. Thanks. -- Veepz 16:10, 31 July 2007 (CDT)
I noticed that too sometimes, but rarely now. Not sure if it's intentional or some markup error. There is a problem with using a certain combination of apostrophes as genuine apostrophes and italics together, which will prevent the italics from terminating correctly. I thought that maybe people encountered that and used this code instead. No idea... --Serenity 16:25, 31 July 2007 (CDT)
Yeah, the purpose of the unicode thing (') is so that you could write something like Galactica's without causing formatting issues, basically having the wrong things italicized because it's confused about where the terminating tag actually is in a sentence or paragraph.-- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 16:31, 31 July 2007 (CDT)
I see. Thank you Joe, and thank you Serenity... BTW, I was trying so hard to get 's to show up on screen. As you see I did not succeed :p -- Veepz 16:38, 31 July 2007 (CDT)
