As any good Greco-Roman major knows, Durandal was Hector's sword at Troy, which passed down to Roland, knight of Chalemagne, in the aptly named "Song of Roland" (Chanson de Roland). Many of the Marathon computers had names taken from it. Bungee (the company that made Marathon) seems to agree in thinking that no one actually played these, as many plot points in Halo (also by Bungee) are kind of taken from it, i.e. (Spoilers) Cortana seems to be in the process of going rampant like Durandal. - Same here, never heard about the Hector's sword connection to the Song of Roland. I named my son Roland and the wild thing is, according to my ex-mother-in-law's genealogy, he actually is a Charlemagne descendant. - I always thought that Halo was kind of, well, maybe Marathon's grandson or so... Same genes, similar upbringing, a bit younger and fresher. ;) The real key is this: Find all the Marathon logos hidden all around the game. And by hidden I mean, like, emblazoned on the side of Pillar of Autumn and on the end of the Captain's pipe in the opening of Halo 1. By the by... What's with Bungee and ship names? It makes sense for the Covenant to have wacky ship names that reek of religeous overtones, but... Pillar of Autumn? In Amber Clad? - I shall christen my flag ship Ricimer's Wit ... nearly as good as naming it Sabre. *wink* Speaking of ship names that are also valid sentence constituents, the message board for Sword of the Stars (a 4X game to be released in the somewhat near future) has some interesting ideas.
