Lieutenant George (Catman) Birch was a Viper pilot on the Battlestar Galactica. Commander William Adama promoted him to Captain and made him the new CAG, much to the dissent of Colonel Tigh, who knew he was too inexperienced. Adama countered that the lieutenant compensated for his lack of experience with loyalty, echoing his problems with his son, Lee Adama, who was the CAG until his defection to the Laura Roslin faction.

Although the elder Adama valued him for his dedication, he proved to be too inexperienced for his new assignment, nearly getting Cadet Katraine killed during target practice in an asteroid field, and failing to keep the vessel Striker from colliding with a tanker during an overly long fueling operation.
