- This article discusses the living computer of a Re-imagined Series basestar. For information on the Cylon-human hybrid child, see Hera.
A Hybrid is the central computer inside a basestar (Torn).
The Hybrid resembles a human female inside an immersion tank similar to a Cylon rebirthing tank. However, the Hybrid isn't a Cylon agent, but another type of Cylon, similar to the autonomous biomechanical pilots within Raiders [1], specially constructed as a living computer that manages the autonomic functions of the basestar, including navigation and FTL Jumps, climate control, and the like.
The Hybrid may not be a complete human body. It appears that the Hybrid is more of a cyborg, consisting of conduits and other connectors mated to, or in place of elements of her body.
It is unclear whether the Hybrid can take autonomous actions on her own. It appears that a unit of seven Cylon agents, located elsewhere in the basestar's command and control center, generate the collective command decisions that are accepted and executed by the Hybrid.
The Hybrid almost continually speaks in phrases and metaphor that makes little sense to the basestar's crew. The utterances appear to be a mixture of system status reports as well as observations of events in and around the basestar that may not be describable in words. The agents known to the Colonials as Leoben Conoy believe that the Hybrid can hear or understand the voice of God.
The Hybrid's connectivity to her basestar provides her with a remarkable awareness of the space surrounding her. She appears to experience a form of ecstasy, perhaps at an orgasmic level, when accomplishing certain tasks such as Jumping.
While most Cylon agents do not consider the Hybrid as a fellow Cylon in person, the Hybrid is capable of thought and feeling, even if the entity has difficulty in expressing it. Regardless of her feelings, the Hybrid is not considered a voting member when other Cylon agents are deciding on a course of action.
