Nadu was the scarred and mentally unstable captain of the scavenger ship Free Cruiser Lightning.[1] His authority over his crew was maintained through fear and a reputation for cunning and ruthlessness.[2]

Nadu's violent and erratic behavior stemmed from a past trauma involving "Crystal Blue," a highly addictive drug rumored to have been created by the Cylons. An addiction to the substance led to the destruction of his previous ship and crew, and left him with severe facial scars and a psychological need to suppress the drug's influence by "singing" a "celestial music."[3]

Driven by greed, Nadu misinterpreted the automated quarantine signal from Research Station Omega as a sign of a major score.[4] His aggressive attempts to seize the station's assets led to the death or capture of seven of his nineteen crewmembers at the hands of the station's Cylon "companions" and the Cylon Dreadnaught Invincible.[5] Enraged by his losses and the humiliation of being outwitted, Nadu assembled a fleet of twenty-three scavenger ships and launched a suicidal attack on Invincible, during which he and his remaining crew were presumably killed.[6]
