The asteroid dust is a cloud barrier on the edge of the Cyrannus galaxy.

Prior to exiting Cyrannus on their exodus from their homeworlds, Galactica and her fleet pass through this black, cloud-like barrier ^{(TOS: "The Long Patrol")}.
