Biographical Notes
Background
(Credit: Sci-Fi Channel) Captain Kelly was an officer onboard the Battlestar Galactica prior to the Cylon Attack on the Colonies. As the LSO (Landing Signal Officer), he was responsible for flight operations and aided in the capture of Aaron Doral. (Mini-Series)
While his status in Season 1 was never touched upon, he is noted as being the third-in-command of Galactica.
As a strong believer in Commander William Adama's command, he voiced his objections over networking the Galactica's various computer systems after Galactica had lost the fleet, essentially saying that the Old Man would never even consider the decision. (Scattered). Soon afterwards, the Galactica was boarded by Cylon Centurions and Capt. Kelly assisted Lt. Gaeta and Col. Tigh in coordinating from the CIC the effort to stop their advance (Valley of Darkness).
Capt. Kelly then returned to his day to day duties as LSO, coordinating Viper landings from the port hangar bay. He was on duty when Kat, disoriented from Stims, crash landed her Viper onto the deck ("Final Cut").
Additional Notes
Kelly's frequent disapperances and reappearances have become the subject of a running gag in the fandom, however the on-screne revelation of his duties as Landing Signal Officer tucked away in Galactica's fightpod did much to quell this.
