Candice McClure[1] (commonly credited as Kandyse McClure) is the actress who portrays Anastasia Dualla in the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica.

African-Canadian Kandyse McClure became a popular young star through the teen-oriented Fox Family series Higher Ground (with future Star Wars star Hayden Christensen) and NBC's Saturday-morning series Just Deal. This "young Halle Berry" went on to become a rising SF star through her recurring role as Elizabeth Munroe on Showtime's Jeremiah.

Born in South Africa in 1980 and now living in Vancouver, British Columbia, McClure also won acclaim from a host of major newspaper critics for her role as Sue Snell, the haughty high-school girl who gains a conscience, in the 2002 telefilm remake of Stephen King's Carrie.

Kandyse McClure made her screen debut in the 1999 TV movie In a Class of His Own. She has gone on to such telefilms as 2gether, Return to Cabin by the Lake, L.A. Law: The Movie and Framed, and starred as a college student caught up in a deadly love triangle in the USA Network Original Movie Passion & Prejudice. On the big screen, she has appeared in Romeo Must Die and See Spot Run, and on TV has guested on the Canadian series Level 9, Jake 2.0, Andromeda, and starred in the "Abduction" episode of the SCI FI Original seventh season of The Outer Limits. She also played "Annie Fisher" in two episodes of Dark Angel, a blind character with a seeing eye dog named Billy.

Prior to Battlestar Galactica, she appeared in Da Vinci's Inquest, playing series regular "Marla," after previously guest-starring in that series in the role of "Lily".

She also played "Donna," the leading character's communication assistant, in a TV Movie called "Santa Baby".

On Battlestar Galactica

edit

McClure described her character, Anastasia Dualla, as "feisty" with a "lot of heart." She noted that as one of the youngest people on the deck, "she’s got something to prove at the beginning of the show."[Book 1]

She also commented on Dualla's relationship with Billy Keikeya, explaining that "Billy is very different from the men Dualla usually encounters. She’s so used to being around these strong, commanding military men, so she enjoys spending time with someone who has a great sincerity and sensitivity."[Book 2]

A self-professed "huge Trekkie" and an "ardent follower of Star Trek: The Next Generation," McClure knew little about Battlestar Galactica before joining the remake but quickly came to enjoy her time on the show, praising the cast, crew, and directors for their shared vision.[Book 3]

Musical Contributions to Battlestar Galactica

edit

McClure contributed her vocal talents to the Season 4 soundtrack, providing her own haunting ghostly voice for the track Funeral Pyre from the episode "Sometimes a Great Notion".[2] In this deeply emotional piece, McClure's vocals represent her character's presence as Lee Adama mourns Dualla, creating a powerful and haunting musical moment that underscored one of the series' most tragic scenes.[2]

Notes

edit
  • The unique spelling of her name was done when McClure first entered into acting as a "kind of a joke". She initially changed it back to Candice, the original spelling, as seen in the Season 3 episode "Occupation," but she had the name changed back in order to avoid confusion.[1]
