Talk:Computers in the Re-imagined Series/Archive 1

Discussion page of Computers in the Re-imagined Series/Archive 1

This was a tough page to build. There have been many references to the computers, and, given that RDM is against Technobabble, there's a limit on what is said to prevent limiting the growth of other stories. As we discover more about the inner computer workings, this should flesh out to be a nice page. (Cisco network engineers and MSCEs need not edit. I like to think that Galacticas more of a UNIX. :) --Spencerian 17:24, 21 October 2005 (EDT)

Merge/Splitting Off Computer History

Per Shane's markup: It's not a bad idea since I bet we'll have more to fill, although we may or may not need as much of a narrative such as what I had originally created. --Spencerian 15:38, 23 May 2006 (CDT)

Merv, please let others chime in before removing a merge request. The article is long and such a new article shortens this one. I rolled back your removal of Shane's tag for this reason. --Spencerian 16:41, 23 May 2006 (CDT)

Not to defend Merv's hasty action, but I also think that a split would be more confusing than helpful. --April Arcus 17:08, 23 May 2006 (CDT)
Sorry I was just looking through and on closer inspection you were right: this page has been getting kind of long. Shouldn't have deleted that. On the other hand I agree with Peter that it would get kind of confusing. --The Merovingian (C - E) 18:24, 23 May 2006 (CDT)
The secion is longer than the main part of computers itself. We could keep a paraphrased paragraph on the top having...
Main article called Comupter History
...so people would goto that page to read the full article. --Shane (T - C - E) 20:43, 23 May 2006 (CDT)
That sounds good. --April Arcus 22:32, 23 May 2006 (CDT)
Concur. Feel free to do so if I don't get around to it sometime soon. --Spencerian 08:29, 24 May 2006 (CDT)

Idea!

Okay, we've now got pics of all the major Battlestar Computers, however there are two pics for the Damage Control computer, one for Pegasus and one for Galactca. Granted the two show the differences between the different ships technologies, however, is it really necessary to have both of them here on this page, as opposed to one (suggest pegasus one for better thumbnail size), for reference purposes? --Fordsierra4x4 16:26, 25 May 2006 (CDT)

I'd prefer them together. --April Arcus 17:42, 25 May 2006 (CDT)
Okay, fair enough - but could the article not be formatted in such a way that the thumbnails correspond with the specific subheadings - ie - in a table format or something cause the article is starting to look messy :( --Fordsierra4x4 18:00, 25 May 2006 (CDT)
I took a stab at using wikitables to do what you suggested. --Steelviper 18:13, 25 May 2006 (CDT)
Looks dire to me. What's wrong with stacking them? --April Arcus 19:09, 25 May 2006 (CDT)
Looks pretty good actually, the only thing wrong is like i said, the DC computer pictures - do we *REALLY* need to have *BOTH* of them there? After all, this isnt a comparison between the two battlestars, just a representation of the systems on both. --Fordsierra4x4 19:45, 25 May 2006 (CDT)
Okay, i just tidied up the wikitables and removed the thumbnail of the Galactica DC board - see what you think - i reckon it looks tidier and more organised. --Fordsierra4x4 19:56, 25 May 2006 (CDT)
Things look very good. The article works wonderfully, in my opinion, and the latest additions of Pegasus' displays help break up the text. If anyone can add a capture of Sesha Abinell on her computer it might also be good in the personal computers section. --Spencerian 13:45, 3 June 2006 (CDT)
Yeah - when i get back to the UK tomorrow (Boat gets in at 6:30pm, so bank on me being online at 9pm!), i'll do an HR HDTV cap of 'Sacrifice'. You want a couple of shots, or just one? --Fordsierra4x4 08:00, 4 June 2006 (CDT)
Less is more. One should be fine. Thanks! --Spencerian 17:35, 4 June 2006 (CDT)
In case you missed it below - um, i uploaded it :D --Fordsierra4x4 22:08, 7 June 2006 (CDT)

Picture for Intro

Could this article use a picture for the intro (in the upper right)? All the text up in the top is pretty intimidating, and having a picture to start things off might help draw in the reader long enough to get to the "illustrated" section. If Sesha's pic (mentioned above) is any good we might use that? --Steelviper 09:04, 6 June 2006 (CDT)

I used a misfit to demonstrate my idea to help fill the void in the upper right next to the TOC. There's actually a lot more room on my display for the pic to be bigger, but I realize not everybody runs at my resolution. --Steelviper 11:03, 6 June 2006 (CDT)
I agree wholeheartedly to break up the monotony there. I thought that Sesha at her computer would be a nice one there... --Spencerian 12:43, 6 June 2006 (CDT)
I guess we can try that when that screencap is uploaded. I checked my usual screencap sources online but came up empty on that shot. --Steelviper 12:45, 6 June 2006 (CDT)
I have the DVD's if you tell me where to look lol. --Mercifull 12:55, 6 June 2006 (CDT)
As noted above - i'm going to do an HD cap of Sacrifice. I was going to do it when i got back on Monday, but have since had to do that horrible 4 letter word - W**k (and dont anyone DARE to even think about alternate letters to place there!). Will do it first thing in the...err..'morning' :D --Fordsierra4x4 21:22, 6 June 2006 (CDT)
Take your time Ford. :) --Shane (T - C - E) 21:57, 6 June 2006 (CDT)
Okay - I just uploaded it - there doesnt seem to be a really good shot - just that. I forgot to crop off the 4 lines at the bottom of the picture, but should still be okay. If someone wants one shot from a specific timestamp, then lemme know. --Fordsierra4x4 19:00, 7 June 2006 (CDT)

The new picture of Sesha's laptop works fine, FS. Thanks. Now I have the chance to figure out what computer they're using as a prop. It's an IBM keyboard, that's for sure...the nice large keys and the text on the keys are unmistakable, and its not from a desktop... (geek alert) --Spencerian 13:02, 12 June 2006 (CDT)

Do we need to crop the lines off of the bottom of the pic, or just leave it as is?--Steelviper 13:07, 12 June 2006 (CDT)
I can do another shot if you want, slightly better quality and then i'll crop those lines off the bottom. unfortunately, its a side effect of HD - the video stream is 'padded' with an extra 8 lines by some broadcasters. --Fordsierra4x4 13:15, 12 June 2006 (CDT)

Major reorganization

I've renamed this article to add it to the article series Science in the Re-imagined Series. Otherwise, it's the same as before, but will soon have some new material. --Spencerian 08:06, 11 October 2006 (CDT)

Data Discs

"Strangely, only individuals later revealed to the Colonials as humanoid Cylons have been shown in the series to have such discs in their initial possession."

  • Didn't the Pegasus crew brig a whole batch of these over to Galactica to replace what they lost in the wipe? (Prompting Gaeta's "Got any porn?" line) OTW 18:23, 16 May 2007 (CDT)
True. That scene is in the extended cut. I'd have to check, but those are round I think. But they could still be included here. It's late in the night now, but I can try getting a screenshot later. --Serenity 18:35, 16 May 2007 (CDT)
I've not seen that version, so if that was the media that Pegasus gave, then yep, get rid of that sentence. --Spencerian 20:33, 16 May 2007 (CDT)

I checked it. There are both octagonal (in single jewel cases) and round discs (on a spindle). Gaeta takes on of the octagonal discs, but then it appears to be round in his hands. But that could just be the light. Obviously there is a lot of reflection from it. Pics are here and here --Serenity 07:53, 17 May 2007 (CDT)
