What is Real?

Spencerian is a computer technician and writer living in Indianapolis, Indiana. (OK, enough talking about myself in third-party voice...)

I'm a typical computer geek, gaming and science fiction fan. Yes, even in my "old age" I game in Neverwinter Nights, Halo, Marathon, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the like. Don't make me come over there and Kick. Your. Ass (and in costume to boot).

I'm one of the administrators here (I'm "The Old Man" here, it seems). Unlike most of you, I've seen the original "Star Trek" and "Battlestar Galactica" when they first aired. And yes, sadly, I even sat through the dreaded "Galactica 1980" and have the drain cell bramage to prove it.

I've a strong interest in "The Matrix" series of films and related material and has developed many interpretations on the philosophy and motivations found in the movies. Most of these ideas have been integrated (with supporting sources, of course) on The Matrix (especially most of the content in the Neo and Trinity articles).

"I am altering our policies. Pray I don't alter them further."

I enjoy other mainstream shows such as Babylon 5 and am a recovering Star Trek fan. I hope to feel better about Star Trek as soon as the franchise has been cured of the Bergman virus that consumes it. I enjoy Star Wars with a friend who's a damned uncanny likeness to George Lucas (He has a starring role in that same movie).

I was an extra in a locally produced movie, "Saving Star Wars," which guest starred actor Dave Prowse, the actual man behind the costume of Darth Vader in the original "Star Wars" trilogy. Prowse was a reknowned fitness trainer for many stars, including the late Christopher Reeve (of "Superman" fame). I got a significant weight-loss tip from the Dark Lord of the Sith: "Drink less water." (Hey, its a Dark Lord of the Sith: you take his advice, know what I'm sayin'?)

In the meantime, I'm very happy with the new Battlestar series and consider it some of the best TV SF in the last 30 years. I've contributed quite a lot to the Battlestar Wiki and hope my contributions help your enjoyment as well.

You Are Living in a Dream World

I have a technical bent, so I've aided in many articles that discuss much of what science we know in the new series. Articles that I've originated or greatly contributed include:

Silly pages like the Toaster, Flashlight, and Numerology pages help keep me (and hopefully, you) from taking the BS Wiki too seriously.

My girlfriend, of whom I'm not worthy, has gotten him hooked on "Firefly" as well. Dammit, there's another costume I have to think about. And yes, my girlfriend (to his right in character bio picture as "Trinity") is quite The Hottie.

How Do You Define "Real?"

Yep, I do the sci-fi convention thing, and frequently seek out or head panels on "Battlestar Galactica" or "The Matrix" trilogy.

I'm currently studying the need to make as many costumes as he can that involve bald, dark and/or mysterious men in TV and cinema:

Costumes I Have:

  • Morpheus: (See picture in my character bio). Best used with beautiful matching Trinity beside me.
  • The costume won a Judge's Award at WindyCon this November, 2005 for best presentation and characterization.
  • I'm betting that the katana in my hand persuaded the judges--"Scary" was their reaction to me.
  • Mace Windu: Also shown here; in fact, I'm the "On my signal, unleash hell" extra in the "Saving Star Wars " movie and my expression was the best Russell Crowe-"You pissed me off"-look I could manage.
  • Neo: OK, no, he's not black or bald, but the long trenchcoat/cassock, of which I own a suitable version, just plain says 'My kung-fu is better than yours.' The looks I get when I wear that at conventions or on the street tells me that no one is going to cross me that day. I'll have a picture of this up one day.
  • Captain Sisko: From "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", played by Avery Brooks. I happen to have a nice yellow Starfleet tunic, but I think red is better.
  • Hawk: The mysterious hired gun and friend to Spenser from the old "Spenser: For Hire" TV series and the Spenser novels by Robert B. Parker (also played by Avery Brooks of "DS9" fame in the series). Add trenchcoat, stylish turtleneck and goatee, and a .357 Magnum replica, and I'm likely to win something (or get shot for being too convincing to local law enforcement).

Costume Ideas for Later:

  1. Frozone: From the most excellent movie, The Incredibles
  2. Imhotep: The mummy from the way-cool and funny The Mummy and The Mummy 2 movies
  3. Othello: A Shakespearean look so I'll have to have something cool to wear at renaissance faires.
  4. Green Lantern (John Stewart): From the animated "Justice League" TV series.
  5. A Viper flight suit and officer uniform from the new BSG. (Well, duh!!)

I'm open to additional costume requests that make women swoon, or cause gnashing of teeth and lamentations in other costumers who aren't worthy (or get too involved in the part).

SF Convention Notes for 2006

  • Capricon 26 in Chicago in February 2006. Good theme this year. Parties remain a high point, but programming is still sparce.
  • MARCON 41, May 26-28, 2006. I attended a very spirited Battlestar panel here. Thanks to the folks there who made the panel very interesting. Saw some friends I met at an ad hoc Battlestar panel at Millenicon in Cincinnati earlier this year.
  • InConjunction 27 in my hometown of Indy, July 7-9, 2006. If there's a Battlestar discussion here, I'll be there.
  • GenCon Indy, August 10-13, 2006 in Indianapolis.
  • DragonCon 2006
    • One of the largest attended cons in the US, Labor Day weekend, September 1-4. Lots of BSG related forums and guests, including James Callis. Ah, a brush with evil...or at least ambivalence.
  • Starbase Indy 2006, also in Indy on Thanksgiving weekend, 2005.
    • Actress Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck) is scheduled to visit this convention in her only scheduled convention in the United States this year! More details on this page later, or visit the Starbase Indy link for more details. I also plan to host panels on Battlestar Galactica at this convention.
