Paramedic Layne Ishay is a medic serving aboard battlestar Galactica. One of the many resource shortfalls of Galactica's ongoing logistical nightmare is a shortage of medical personnel. Doctor Cottle is the only trained physician on board (perhaps in all of The Fleet), supplemented by a handful of medics. As a result, Ishay has been required to step up to perform medical procedures she wouldn't normally be expected to perform.
Biography
Immediately after the attempted assassination of then Commander William Adama by Sharon "Boomer" Valerii, and with the absence of Doctor Cottle aboard Galactica during her isolation from the rest of the fleet, Commander Adama's life was left in the hands of Galactica's paramedics.
After it was clear that no other aid was coming, and that the commander would be lost without immediate action, Colonel Tigh ordered Ishay to operate on Adama (Scattered). Despite never having performed an operation in her life, Ishay's emergency thoracic surgery stabilized Adama's condition until Doctor Cottle returned, who, with Ishay's assistance, stopped the commander's internal bleeding (Fragged).
Ishay later assisted Dr. Cottle in delivering Caprica-Sharon's Cylon-Human Hybrid baby, Hera, by Caesarian section (Downloaded).
Ishay speaks with an accent similar to Gaius Baltar's, which may be a local characteristic of one of the Twelve Colonies.
Notes
Kerry Norton is also the wife of actor Jamie Bamber (Lee Adama). Her on-air "accent" is, of course, that of United Kingdom citizens. Her husband is also British, but disguises his accent when portraying Commander Lee Adama.
