Probably unintended

I never knew references were invisible to anonymous users until I logged out and saw it for myself. I'm pretty sure this is unintended, and I'll see if I can fix it. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 13:22, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Turns out this is an ancient bug nobody ever fixed. I fixed it, and references for anonymous users are now working again, with the catch that they won't show up until the cache is purged or the article is edited (because the old, referenceless versions are still stuck in the parser cache). --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 14:18, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Wow, how odd... Never saw that before. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 17:08, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
It's very crazy. What I think happened is that some code somewhere wanted to know whether the current user had edit rights, and if it turned out they didn't, the parser would be fired up to generate a permission error message, and upon initialization that parser instance would erase Cite's record of <ref> tags. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 19:58, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
