Aidan Dee is a Canadian actress who portrayed Hippolyta in Caprica. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, she is known for her work in television and film.

Career

Dee's earliest documented stage work came in community theatre in the Greater Vancouver area. In May 2003, while a student at Langley Fine Arts School, she played Kate in a production of The Pirates of Penzance, a role she took on after two previous stints as principal boy in Metro Vancouver pantomimes.[external 1] The production was staged by the Gilbert and Sullivan Society[external 2] and ran from 21 May to 1 June 2003 at the Surrey Arts Centre.[external 3] She described playing Kate as deliberately scatterbrained so the character would be underestimated, and predicted that Kate would eventually marry into wealth.[commentary 1]

Dee began her professional training at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City, graduating in 2005 with national scholarship recognition. She studied acting, musical theatre, and voice, with early training at Vancouver's Arts Umbrella and Langley Fine Arts School.

Following her graduation, Dee worked in off-off-Broadway theatre productions in New York, including roles in "Love's Labour's Lost" (Rosaline), "Gypsy" (featured ensemble), and "Uncommon Women and Others" (Holly) before returning to Vancouver to pursue film and television work.

Upon returning to Vancouver, Dee also worked as a model, joining Model Mayhem in 2007 and maintaining an active profile until 2010. She was particularly interested in the storytelling aspect of modeling and applied her acting background to enhance her photographic work.[external 4]

Dee began her screen career in 2008 with three short films — The Manila Marauder, in which she played Betty[external 5]; No Means No[external 6]; and Paul Pontius, credited as Aidan Lee[external 7] — as well as the television series Reaper. In 2009, she played Shane's Wife in the action film A Dangerous Man[external 8] and Chachi in "The Farm," a pilot for The L Word spinoff series.[external 9]

Her most notable role came in 2010 when she was cast as Hippolyta in Caprica. She appeared in three episodes: Caprica's "End of Line", "Unvanquished" and "Retribution", portraying a former student of Clarice Willow's who joined Barnabas Greeley's STO cell.

Between 2014 and 2016, Dee made guest appearances in several television series. She played Demon #2 in the Supernatural episode "Reichenbach" (2014)[external 10], Trashy Girl in the Backstrom episode "Corkscrewed" (2015)[external 11], and Crew Production Member in the series premiere of UnREAL (2015).[external 12] She also played Expeditor in the television film Mix (2015)[external 13], Aide in the DC's Legends of Tomorrow episode "Leviathan" (2016)[external 14], and, credited as Aiden Dee, Snob #1 in Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce (2016).[external 15]

During this period, Dee also became a recurring performer in director Ryan Nicholson's Vancouver-based horror productions for Plotdigger Films. In 2014, she starred as rookie police officer Dana in the horror film Collar, whose performance Horror News Network described as "one of the only decent human beings in the entire movie."[external 16] In a 2015 interview, Nicholson said he had worked with Dee on previous films and trusted her to take the role's more difficult material seriously.[commentary 2] She went on to play the lead role of Stacy in Nicholson's Gutterballs 2: Balls Deep (2015)[external 17], with the entertainment site Dread Central calling her Collar performance "remarkably powerful and unforgettable."[external 18]

In 2019, Dee had a supporting role as Jessa in The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open, which had its world premiere in the Generation section of the Berlin International Film Festival on 9 February 2019.[external 19] The film went on to receive six nominations at the Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Motion Picture,[external 20] and won three, including for direction and original screenplay.[external 21]

Following her acting career, Dee transitioned to occupational health and safety work. Beginning in 2019, she worked as a health and safety administrator and auditor for CDC Construction Ltd., followed by roles as Health and Safety Supervisor for the Broadway Subway Project Corporation (2021-2024) and Safety Advisor for B&B Contracting Group (2024). As of August 2024, she works as an OHS Advisor for WorkSafe Victoria.[external 22]

Personal life

Dee was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia.[external 23] After acting from 2003 to 2019, she transitioned to a career in occupational health and safety, currently working in Victoria, British Columbia as an OHS Advisor.
