Jim Thomson (also credited as James Thomson) is an American visual effects editor and assistant editor who provided the voice of Serge, the Graystone family's butler robot in Caprica. He voiced Serge in fourteen episodes throughout the series.[external 1]

Education

Thomson earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio-Television-Film from California State University, Northridge, in 1983.[external 2]

Career

Work on Caprica

In addition to his voice work on Caprica, Thomson worked as an assistant editor on the Caprica pilot.[external 3] The producers credit Thomson's vocal performance with saving the character of Serge from being cut from the show. After hearing his take, they were convinced the concept of a domestic robot would work.[1]

According to the commentary on the pilot episode, Thomson is a certified genius and a member of the Mensa Club.[2]

Visual Effects and Editorial Work

Thomson has built an extensive career in visual effects editing and assistant editing, with his work spanning major film and television productions. His most notable film credits include visual effects work on Titanic (1997)[external 4] and The One (2001).[external 5]

His television work includes significant contributions to major genre series. He served as visual effects editor on Falling Skies (2011-2014, 31 episodes),[external 6] The Strain (2014-2017, 40 episodes),[external 7] The Flash (2017-2018, 17 episodes),[external 8] See (2019, 3 episodes),[external 9] The Twilight Zone (2020, 10 episodes),[external 10] and Foundation (2021, 10 episodes).[external 11]

More recent projects include The Continental (2023, 3 episodes)[external 12] and The Spiderwick Chronicles (2024, 8 episodes).[external 13]

His assistant editor work includes positions on The Fugitive (2000-2001),[external 14] Life on Mars (2008, 2 episodes),[external 15] and Leverage (2008, 2 episodes).[external 16]

He has also worked on several television movies, including The Librarian: Quest for the Spear (2004)[external 17] and The Librarian: Return to King Solomon's Mines (2006),[external 18] the failed Wonder Woman pilot (2011),[external 19] and The Sixth Gun (2013).[external 20]

Thomson has been described by colleagues as a very solid assistant editor who is an excellent problem solver and very creative, especially with visual effects work.[external 21]
