Lieutenant Joe Palladino, callsign "Hammerhead", was a Viper pilot on the Battlestar Galactica. He was assigned to lead a detachment of marines to the civilian cargo ship Gideon. Col. Saul Tigh had ordered him to retrieve desperately needed supplies from the transport, which was withholding them from Galactica in protest of Tigh's declaration of Martial Law.
Due to his inexperience at riot control, he was unable to maintain control of his forces and the irate civilian crowd during the food transfer. When the situation grew violent, one of his marines fired a weapon and other marines under his command began shooting randomly at the panicked crowd. Despite repeatedly ordering his marines to cease fire, four civilians were killed during the incident and he was reprimanded by Colonel Tigh for his failure. ("Resistance")
The killings on the Gideon began to exact a mental toll on Palladino. He began to displace blame for the incident onto Tigh and developed a deep and brooding hatred toward him. When reporter D'anna Biers began investigating the Gideon incident Palladino was forced to relive the nightmare all over again. He eventually snapped and decided to be the one to punish Tigh for incident when no one else would. He invaded his quarters, bound and gagged his wife Ellen then waited for the Colonel himself to return. When Tigh returned Palladino confronted him with a gun and seemed ready to shoot him, but he lost his nerve and Tigh was able to talk him down. Galactica's marines then escorted him away in handcuffs while D'anna and her camera crew looked on. Palladino is now in the Galactica brig, most likely serving a lengthy sentence as a result of his attempt on Col. Tigh's life. ("Final Cut")
