Revision as of 14:27, 15 March 2006

This page is one of Battlestar Wiki's many projects.
This page serves to coordinate discussion on a particular aspect of this Wiki. The formal recommendations of a project may be treated as policies.

This project is meant to coordinate and standardize the transcription of Ronald D. Moore's freely available episode podcasts. Our goal is to produce a searchable text repository for purposes of citation. At this time, we will only be transcribing freely available podcasts from SciFi.com, not additonal DVD commentaries. Ron D. Moore and David Eick have recorded commentary tracks for the Mini-series (also including director Michael Rymer), "33", "Bastille Day", "Act of Contrition", and "You Can't Go Home Again". However, they have not been put up online for free but are only available in the Season 1 DVD set. Therefore, transcripts of these are not provided here, though relevant quotes may be found sourced in certain articles on Battlestar Wiki.

This project is a daughter of the Citation Jihad.

Standards

Namespace

Podcast transcripts should be named after the episode to which they correspond with the addition of the (podcast) namespace, for example, Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down (podcast).

Structure

Begin each podcast article with the template

{{podcast|author=YourNameHere}}.

Use first-level headings to divide Teaser and Act breaks. Make each heading an offsite link to the appropriate podcast segment, e.g.

==[http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/downloads/podcast/mp3/109/bsg_ep109_1of5.mp3 Teaser]==

Try to break up RDMs comments into paragraphs along topical lines.

Transcription

RDM frequently uses "uh", "um" and "y'know" as discourse particles. For readabilities sake, try to exclude these where they interrupt the flow of an otherwise grammatical sentence.

Where RDM interrupts himself, end the last word of the first statement with an emdash. You may include whatever discourse particles he uses to introduce the next thought. For example:

"I think it's a very good movie, one that I always thought was a— y'know, prime for us to do a riff on."

Generally, you may ignore emphasis except where RDM's tone is critical to the interpretation of a statement (e.g. sarcasm).

Links

Where RDM mentions a BSG episode or character, link to our own article. Where he mentions a television show or actor which we do not have (or need) our own article for, offer a link to the corresponding page on IMDB. If another resource such as Wikipedia or Memory Alpha has more comprehensive information, you may link there at your discression. To avoid overlinking, only link once per act break.

Corrections

Except for simple spelling errors, do not offer a "correction" without first having listened to the relevant portion of the recording. Always leave a comment on the talk page explaining your change.

Checkins

When you begin work on a transcription, place your name beside the segment you are working on. When you've completed and uploaded it, mark your name next to "Transcribed". Afterwards, it would be helpful for a second user to verify the transcription.
