By default, Battlestar Wiki uses a rich-text editor (otherwise known as "What You See Is What You Get", or by its acronym, "WYSIWYG"). This allows people unaware of MediaWiki markup to edit the wiki as if they were writing a document in Microsoft Word or a similar application.
This page provides an overview of the rich-text editor, and is still in the procress of being written.
For those who want to use the default MediaWiki editor, click here to see the instructions on how to disable the rich-text editor.
Features
- "Character Map" feature allows for the insertion of symbols and special characters that are not easily available on a QWERTY keyboard.
- Easily switch between "rich-text" and "wikitext".
- Easily find and replaces phrases, which helps when people define characters by their callsigns instead of their proper surname.
- Easily insert and edit tables to organize data.
- Easily edit content without worrying about breaking templates.
- Use right-click menus to access options like you would a basic rich text editor.
- Insert links via the link search wizard, which automatically finds the correct article title to link to.
- Easily insert references into articles via wizards.
- Compose and edit articles in full-screen mode.
Tips and Tricks
- To edit a template already defined on a page, simply right click on the yellow {T} box and click on "Template Properties" in the popup menu.
- To disable the rich text editor on pages that might break something were it to be used, simply add the __NORICHEDITOR__ magic word in the page, under the wikitext view.
- Any boxes with a yellow background can be modified by right clicking on the yellow boxes and accessing their "Properties" via the right-click mouse menu.
Disabling the editor
To disable this editor, follow these instructions while logged in:
- Click on "My preferences" at the top of the page, just above the header picture on the default skin.
- Click on the "Misc" tab on the preferences page.
- Click to add a checkmark to the checkbox next to "Disable rich editor".
- Save the changes by clicking "Save". A message box will appear above the tabs notifying you that your preferences were updated successfully.
Troubleshooting
- The rich text editor may be disabled if you have disabled the default MediaWiki edit toolbar in your preferences. To enable this, simply go to your preferences, click the "Editing" tab and add a check to the checkbox next to "Show edit toolbar (JavaScript)", then save it.
- Ensure that JavaScript is enabled in your browser. Also ensure that you program any pop-up blockers to accept popups from the battlestarwiki.org domain. Consult your browser's help documentation for the "how-to" on enabling this feature.
Known minor issues
There are a few minor issues that are being ironed out by the development team, and are noted here, among them:
- Piping of links that do not require piping. Links such as [[William Adama]] are being piped like so: [[William Adama|William Adama]].
- The edit toolbox at the bottom of each editing page does not automatically insert syntax upon clicking on the selected tag or syntax string. You may copy and paste the strings manually; however, they must be pasted in wikitext editing view, otherwise the formatting and link will be included and will need to be removed manually via the wikitext view.
- Creating or modifying any redirects must occur in the wikitext view, otherwise they are improperly formatted.
