:The new solution makes sure everyone can set autoborders, rather than just the people who can edit Template:Flag (which should really be protected). --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 10:31, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
::Maybe, but if we had a template check... every page would be looking for it and it become a "requested template" under Wanted Pages. ::I saw the fix. What exactly is the job queue and what does it mean that it's over 15K? Shane, could you elaborate more on why you prefer the #switch over the templates? AFAIK, doing an #ifexists on a page doesn't get it into Special:Wantedpages. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 12:34, 23 May 2007 (CDT)

::Instead of flag (gives BE), use country flag (gives BE). Shane somehow managed to mess up the BE border, but the DE and EE look fine to me. <s>Meanwhile, I'll try to fix the BE border.</s> Fixed. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 06:27, 25 May 2007 (CDT)
:::That wont stop borders from appearing all over the place tho will it? How do i remove the horrible border from the german flag on the front page? It looks ugly. --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 08:11, 25 May 2007 (CDT)
::::If your uglyness complaint was about the DE flag not lining up with the rest of the flags, that's fixed now. It's an ugly, temporary fix, though (I simply moved it down by 5px), but it's the best we've got going so far. AFAIK you're our CSS guru, so maybe if you take a look at Template:Border you'll come up with something better. You can use User:Catrope/Template:Border and Template for testing, if you want to. If you just find the borders ugly in themselves, you can always remove them using the procedure I outlined above. The flags for the Main Page are at Template:International inline. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 09:24, 25 May 2007 (CDT)

Hi Catrope,

Thank you for the code. I ran into a few subtle bugs when I tried to fix the nesting of those table a couple of months ago. I'm about to go to Switzerland for a few days but I'll review and implement you fix when I get back. Cheers, Ruud Koot 13:13, 7 June 2007 (CDT)

:Yeah, BSGWiki SSH is working fine for me, it's Wikimedia. A bug was discovered in Debian's openssl package which caused the SSH key generator to generate too predictable keys (they're supposed to be random), so my RSA key to Wikimedia SVN was disabled. That's why I created a new one and that's also why I haven't put 1.13 online yet as I can't access SVN until my new key is processed.
:There's also a problem with the SVN program on the servers: it's not linked to neon (whatever that is), so it can't download anything through HTTP. That's not much of a problem right now, though, as I'll just update on my machine and upload, but it's something you should know if you ever decide to play around with SVN on the server. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 21:13, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

You are clear to upgrade all wikis to 1.13, Saturday 31st anytime after 0500 hours. Wikis should be backed up by 0500. Shane (talk) 00:32, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
:Oh, that'd be nice. I liked doing it nonetheless. :Also, you might wanna know the MediaWiki folks are working on a better API so bots won't have to dig through HTML responses any more. It's not finished yet, but when it is, it'll make a bot programmer's life a lot easier. I'm intending to write a bot that uses the new API (after I've helped finishing the API itself, of course), and your ArchiveBot just gave me an idea for another feature ;) --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 14:41, 11 June 2007 (CDT)
:I rather run a MYSQL backup before we do anything. I will be back after noon my timezone EDT. I'll run a backup. In theory it can be done anytime. Saturday was the day the backup happens automaticly after the episode airs. But it shouldn't take the long for updating. Shane (talk) 10:13, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
::Alright. Drop me a note when you've done the backup. Your noon is my 6PM, so I should be able to respond quickly unless you catch me during dinner. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 10:29, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
:::Reason why we are doing a single auth database is so we can use it on all the FrakMedia wikis. :) Shane (talk) 10:33, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
::::Theoretically, you could (ab)use one of the existing databases for that. My update.php addition was reverted, BTW, because it tried to add the CentralAuth to all databases instead of just one. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 10:50, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
:::::Ok. I ran a backup of all the databases. I have created a database called "auth_wiki" same username. I will send you the password email. I am importing the SQL file into that database. I got it directly from the SVN. Anything else? Shane (talk) 11:30, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
::::::BTW, update.php should drop the tables that are decrepited. It's made the EN database weird since it's been around forever and doesn't match up well with newer database looks. :::::::You can see which tables are old here. update.php doesn't DROP them because wikis generally don't have DROP permissions. == Bots and MediaWiki API ==
global_group_permissions and global_user_groups
I saw your comments regarding edit tokens at MW:API and thought you may be interested in the SimpleForms extension which already has the ability to update and create articles from the HTTP request parameters. It doesn't implement edit tokens yet, but does allow you to lock it down so that requests are only allowed from the localhost which means your server-side scripts can update articles and is much easier to implement than a bot. If you prefer bots we have some Perl code for accessing wikis at http://www.organicdesign.co.nz/wiki.pl and there are libs like PyWikiBot. See also Wikipedia:Creating a bot. --Nad 21:28, 23 June 2007 (CDT)

Why don't you just copy a previous episode page and change all the relevant stuff (which is just a few numbers and names), instead of using the default template? That's far easier. I was already done with everything when you submitted the page. --Serenity 15:23, 26 June 2007 (CDT)

I got CentralAuth working, but GlobalGroupPermissions is a nightmare to set up... how do you get it working?? All help will be much appreciated. Thanks, AC --Sunstar NW XP 21:30, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

I linked to the Twelve Colonies article because Virgon is a TOS/RDM disambiguation. I see your argument, but for that you should use Virgon (RDM).
German BSG Wiki
Generally though, I think we try to link directly to correct sites and not use redirect links even if they are easier. You did with Galactica vs Galactica (RDM) for example. --Serenity 05:59, 2 July 2007 (CDT)
Hi
:The point here is that we can be fairly sure that Galactica (RDM) will always end up linking to the right page, no matter what crazy stunts we decide to pull. Galactica may not redirect there forever. Same with The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Virgon vs. Virgon (RDM): the latter is guaranteed to be right and stay right, whereas the former is not. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 06:01, 2 July 2007 (CDT)

I already told Shane about this, he must have forgotten. Its not a CSS error its a bug in the actual extension taking the wrong attributes. Port wine finish[edit]

I'm pretty sure that's what he said, unless you hear differently. It also seems to match the description of the Quinta Ruban (Port Cask Extra Matured), mentioned on the Wikipedia article. --Steelviper 14:27, 11 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Actually, it's Glenmorangie Port Wood Finish. :) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 14:34, 11 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I didn't even listen to the podcast yet (is ashamed), I just thought it made no sense at all and changed it to something phonetically close that did make sense (that's what I meant by "intuition" in my edit summary). I know I'm not supposed to do that, but it seemed like an obvious error to me and the podcast was in pre-verification stage. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 16:43, 11 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I don't see that as a problem. Don't sweat it. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 16:50, 11 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well you know, the BW:POD guideline state (and rightly so) that one should always listen to the podcast before offering "corrections", because RDM's sentences sometimes don't make that much sense. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 16:54, 11 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Catrope nailed it. All we should do as transcribers is write what he says. However, when it comes to links, I feel like it's ok to link to what he means (if it's obvious from the context what he's actually talking about). --Steelviper 19:21, 11 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
That's what we always do. I am wary of the dropped words like [this] in Podcast:The Ties That Bind. They're mostly unnecessary and not used in any of the other podcasts. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 20:24, 11 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

SSH[edit]

I did give you access to SSH so you could run the update php file right? Shane (talk) 21:09, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, BSGWiki SSH is working fine for me, it's Wikimedia.
There's also a problem with the SVN program on the servers: it's not linked to neon (whatever that is), so it can't download anything through HTTP. That's not much of a problem right now, though, as I'll just update on my machine and upload, but it's something you should know if you ever decide to play around with SVN on the server. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 21:13, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
We are using redhat, and yes.. I got SVN runing on here with no problems on svn.frakmedia.net :) Shane (talk) 03:24, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Do you mean the SVN server or client? Either way, I get a "host not found" for svn.frakmedia.net --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 08:51, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Server. your right. :P I have it under apollo. Shane (talk) 11:38, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
It turns out I don't have write access to the hb directory, it's all 755 bsgwiki/bsgwiki in there. Could you run chmod -R g+w hb so the hb directory and everything inside it is writable by the bsgwiki group? --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 11:46, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Will do. Shane (talk) 12:43, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeah... since your overseas it will take just a little bit longer. Shane (talk) 12:49, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Clear to Commit[edit]

You are clear to upgrade all wikis to 1.13, Saturday 31st anytime after 0500 hours. Wikis should be backed up by 0500. Shane (talk) 00:32, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Good. However, I'll be on an island on Saturday. Is it OK if I do it on another day, like tomorrow (=Thursday), Friday or Monday? Also, 0500 in which timezone? --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 08:34, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I rather run a MYSQL backup before we do anything. I will be back after noon my timezone EDT. I'll run a backup. In theory it can be done anytime. Saturday was the day the backup happens automaticly after the episode airs. But it shouldn't take the long for updating. Shane (talk) 10:13, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Alright. Drop me a note when you've done the backup. Your noon is my 6PM, so I should be able to respond quickly unless you catch me during dinner. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 10:29, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Reason why we are doing a single auth database is so we can use it on all the FrakMedia wikis. :) Shane (talk) 10:33, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Theoretically, you could (ab)use one of the existing databases for that. My update.php addition was reverted, BTW, because it tried to add the CentralAuth to all databases instead of just one. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 10:50, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok. I ran a backup of all the databases. I have created a database called "auth_wiki" same username. I will send you the password email. I am importing the SQL file into that database. I got it directly from the SVN. Anything else? Shane (talk) 11:30, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
BTW, update.php should drop the tables that are decrepited. It's made the EN database weird since it's been around forever and doesn't match up well with newer database looks. I don't want to manually do it since I have no idea what tables are still being used. :) Shane (talk) 16:28, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
You can see which tables are old here. update.php doesn't DROP them because wikis generally don't have DROP permissions. Thanks for the password, I'll get on it tomorrow. First I gotta watch Sine Qua Non with a couple of friends tonight :P --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 17:11, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Then you should have --drop-table I'll give the database user drop permissions. :D Shane (talk) 18:34, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sine Qua Non was cool, but I'm kind of tired now (it's 11 PM), so I'm gonna go get some sleep. I'll probably do the upgrade tomorrow afternoon (morning in the US). Seeing as quite a few edits were made and probably will be made today, you probably wanna run another backup tonight (your 11PM-ish, that is). --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 21:20, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I will run it right before I goto bed, which will be my 1am EDT. BTW -- Sleep is for the weak! :D Shane (talk) 22:07, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Heading to bed. It's running so it should be done by the time you read this next. Shane (talk) 04:13, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Seems to only have one error: Special:MergeAccount. Is php missing something? Shane (talk) 11:52, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Err, what the hell? You did the upgrade? I know I didn't do anything... Anyway, it says "no wiki for bsgwiki_de", maybe something's wrong with your CentralAuth configuration? --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 11:57, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah. LOL! I did it at 6:30am EDT. You can take a look @ the CentralAuth stuff. I done all I can do. :) Shane (talk) 11:59, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I will. I have real-life stuff to do, though, so I can't guarantee I'll do it this afternoon (CEST), or even today. If not today, I'll definitely do it tomorrow, though. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 12:06, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
rgr. I tried bring "URLBot" over to DE as a test, and it didn't work so I think that's where the error lies. Shane (talk) 12:07, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
It did work, just that you have to say "Keep logged in." The only other thing not working is SystemMessages and the Chinese Wiki is on the fritiz again. :P Shane (talk) 12:40, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I noticed the Special:Allmessages error too, looks like a PHP error. Unfortunately, I don't have enough rights. I need write rights on /home/bsgwiki (owned by the bsgwiki group, which I'm a member of, so chmod -R g+w /home/bsgwiki should do it) and read access to /var/log/httpd to find out what's causing the blank page at Special:Allmessages. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 16:49, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I did the chmod. The log files for the wiki URL are in /home/bsgwiki/logs :) Shane (talk) 17:04, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yep. Was a PHP error. I had to incress the memory usage from 20mb to 30mb in the LocalSettings.php file. :X Shane (talk) 20:37, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Good. Now I have a MySQL problem: I can log into MySQL with 'auth_wiki' and the password you gave me, but I don't have access to any database at all, not even 'auth_wiki'... --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 20:56, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
hah. ok. Log on with the bsgwiki_admin username & password. I found out when doing it has to use that one. So whatever. "auth_wiki" is still the DB name which will be bsgwiki_auth as soon as we clear this up. Shane (talk) 21:03, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
If you have a chance, log into the Forums and visit the IRC page (http://www.battlestarforum.com/irc.php). We can talk via that way. I am ^BuGs^ on IRC so we don't have to do this cross-talk page talk :) Shane (talk) 21:06, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

AntiSpoof Extension[edit]

I know you mentioned it earlier, but if you wanted to add the AntiSpoof extension, feel free to. I'm not sure where to apply the SQL patch on this one, now that we're running the CentralAuth extension. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 05:06, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

global_group_permissions and global_user_groups[edit]

I can't figure it out. So.. what I need entered is myself and Joe to have the same permissions as we have now on the EN wiki entered. Yourself added to the global Sysop and Stward List. Check this post out: http://www.battlestarforum.com/showpost.php?p=5683&postcount=8 You should have access to read it. :) For phpymyadmin you should be able to select loggin is as "bsgwiki_admin" in the upper right, but it's the default "server".
