RSS feed

Well, I've enabled the RSS feed extension. The only thing remaining to be determined is the placement of the feed box. ahem, I'm still working on it. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 20:28, 26 December 2006 (CST)

Ok, I got the extension working. We just need to work out the placement on the main page, as well as other details.

Sweet! I'll play with adding a box under the "airdates" with just the post titles. Also, thanks for getting the site back up! --Steelviper 14:06, 27 December 2006 (CST)
No problem. Need to find out what happened in the first place... -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 14:08, 27 December 2006 (CST)
I talked with the Planet and it was some permissions. But then after we got that working, the database "connection" was messed. Shane (T - C - E) 14:17, 27 December 2006 (CST)
Right. That was eaccelerator. When the server rebooted, the caching feature turned on, and that's why the database connection was fraked. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 14:27, 27 December 2006 (CST)
Ah. :-) Expert. :) Shane (T - C - E) 14:37, 27 December 2006 (CST)
You had already done all the "hard" work, too. I switched to Click-ext (thanks, Shane) to have the icon direct you to the blog. There's room for 10 titles (vertically), but that might be overwhelming/information overload. If people can check out the new section on the project page and weigh in with opinions, we should be good to copy and paste if the consensus favors its addition. --Steelviper 14:38, 27 December 2006 (CST)

This appears to be busted. Need to reinstall since the upgrade? --Steelviper 16:02, 3 January 2007 (CST)

update: I've added an example to Battlestar Wiki:Main page. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 22:06, 26 December 2006 (CST)

Looks good. I have the updated lang bars. I think it's go for production. Shane (T - C - E) 00:29, 27 December 2006 (CST)
Well, I think the placement is good as well, I think the text needs some work though. (I did it quickly, so it's not stellar material on my part, in my view, and thus this is a nice target for a nuclear warhead.) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 13:50, 27 December 2006 (CST)

Blank citations

When the Colonial Fleet News Service has no references, the box just shows up. We need to find a way to hide the reference box on the main page when no references are displayed. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 13:40, 3 September 2007 (CDT)

I think that would be pretty tricky to do. The citations box itself has no way of knowing that there just happen to be no citations on Main Page or any of the pages it transcludes. The best way would probably be to just comment out the citations box manually when there are no refs left. It's not ideal, but at least it's easy and doable. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 13:44, 3 September 2007 (CDT)
Yeah, that's just about what I already figured. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 13:57, 3 September 2007 (CDT)

Quote box positioning and other things

One of the more recurring comments I've been seeing is that the Main Page is simply too cluttered. So a few things come to mind....

Recently got a comment from the survey recommending that we move the quotes section down some more, since it is of low importance. I do tend to agree with that assessment, so in its place we can do one of a few things:

  1. Move the portal stuff in its place, a la Memory Alpha's main page.
    • Doing this would alleviate some of the "articles are hard to find unless I know precisely what I'm looking for" issues people are reporting...
  2. Move the Colonial Fleet News box to its place. Since that's important as well.

What we need to keep:

  1. Portals (we frankly need to have a bigger box, leading back to my earlier point, since it needs to be expanded... painfully so)
  2. News (including merchandise)
  3. BSW Blog & RDM blog
  4. The Search box feature (expanded so that it also covers BW)
  5. Featured Articles/Pictures
  6. Airdates

Plus, get rid of the FrakMedia feed as well. That's worthless to most BSG fans, IMHO.

I would be tempted to get rid of the "sister projects" box as well, since we can roll that (and Frak Media's website) into the tab header (a lá Battlestar Pegasus) that the wiki will have soon.

I'll have more later, but I need to go away from the keyboard now. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 13:19, 20 February 2008 (CST)

Ok, good start so far. In the place of the old portals box (next to the "Welcome to Battlestar Wiki" box), we can move the search box there and be rid of the box further own down. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 18:31, 21 February 2008 (CST)
