Preemptive Block?

I'd hate to block somebody before they "did" anything, but having a userid that is a numeric number nearly identical to a handful of other accounts that I have recently blocked is awfully suspicious (especially as it was created at almost the same time as a vandal account). Would a pre-emptive block be advisable in this case, or should we give the benefit of the doubt ("assume good faith") in this case? --Steelviper 09:47, 1 May 2006 (CDT)

I share your caution, but I think it's common sense that good-faith users don't register with meaningless decimal strings as their usernames. Since you raised the concern, I'll leave it up to you until he offends. --April Arcus 10:08, 1 May 2006 (CDT)
If it just impacted me, I think I'd wait until he/she did something (innocent until proven guilty). However, I'm not always around, and I'd hate to see one of you guys have to do the grunt work (quick though it usually is) to pay for my leniency. I'm going to go ahead with the indefinite block. Mr. or Mrs. 1146483070, if you are in fact a good faith user, please feel free to drop me an email and I will promptly unblock you, or perhaps consider creating a more alphabetically-oriented username. --Steelviper 10:17, 1 May 2006 (CDT)
I adore the phrase "more alphabetically-oriented username." Anyway, you did the right thing, as a purely numeric username (past 2 digits, maybe) is begging for trouble. --CalculatinAvatar 14:02, 1 May 2006 (CDT)
I concur with you on your move, SV. I reacted immediately to block while simultaneously looking for any spoiled pages, and we do have a history long enough to be understanding in this, as well as having two accounts created at about the same time. This smells strongly of scripting, something making accounts by automation. --Spencerian 12:24, 1 May 2006 (CDT)
