I can no longer remember the original title to this episode however it was originally written before the pilot episode had been even cast. The original deal with the net work was for six hours of scripts. The 3 hour pilot and the two hour sequel were written by the Exec. Producer and Producer. They had one hour of material still to deliver, along with a series of special effects tests. I was hired to write the last hour...and the premise I was given was the feature film "The Guns of Navarone." Later, when the pilot had been shot and the series was on the air, it was failing in the ratings. They took my teleplay and expanded it into a two hour episode by adding plot elements from "The Dirty Dozen." My original teleplay was set on a desert planet...but it was cheaper and easier to make it a frozen planet...hence the episode as it now exists.
As I recall, the studio and producers used many of the same special effects on the NBC scifi series Buck Rogers.
