The Gideon is a heavy hauler transport vessel within the Fleet, captained by Elias Meeker (The Son Also Rises).

During Laura Roslin's removal from office and Colonel Tigh's enactment of martial law, Galactica Boarding Party 6, under Lieutenant Joe "Hammerhead" Palladino and made up of several Colonial Marines, was went to the Gideon. Civilians rioted and attacked the boarding party. The Marines opened fire and killed 4 civilians

The civilians aboard are protesting Roslin's removal from the presidency, the declaration martial law and the dissolving of the Quorum of Twelve, by hindering an effort to resupply Galactica. During the protest, where coffee and other objects are thrown at the boarding party, the Marines hear what they think to be a gunshot. Believing that they are under attack, they fire into the crowd, until Palladino manages to weakly regain control of the situation after the damage had been inflicted (Resistance).

Reporter D'anna Biers later hypes the incident as the "Gideon Massacre" to try to turn civilian opinion against Galactica (Final Cut).

Notes

  • "Gideon" is the name of one of the biblical characters in the Book of Judges.
  • It is unknown whether or not Meeker was in command during the "Gideon Massacre".
