Foley Artistry

edit source

Lyle entered the field of foley artistry after initially training to be a sound effects supervisor. He discovered his talent for the craft when an editor placed him in a studio and asked him to complete a film project on short notice.[1] His background as a drummer provided him with the rhythmic precision and synchronization abilities essential to the profession, which he describes as requiring him to be a "sync-monkey" who can replicate movements and sounds in perfect timing with on-screen action.[2]

Over his career spanning more than two decades, Lyle has worked at every major Hollywood studio, including Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, as well as numerous independent post-production facilities throughout the Los Angeles area.[3] His work has included creating distinctive sound signatures for memorable characters and productions, including the characteristic limp and cane sounds of Hugh Laurie's Dr. Gregory House in House M.D., the squeaky vocalizations of the minions in Despicable Me, and his own appearance in a Diet Coke commercial that aired during the 2012 Oscar telecast.[4]

Lyle maintains a collection of over 50 pairs of shoes for his work, ranging from combat boots to six-inch stilettos, each chosen for the specific sounds they produce.[5] He has described the physical demands of the profession, noting that he works with a personal trainer to maintain the conditioning required for the athletic aspects of foley performance.[6]

His creative problem-solving abilities have been noted by colleagues. For the 2009 film Watchmen, supervising sound editor Scott Hecker asked Lyle to create the foley for the Comedian's spinning pin badge visual effect. Lyle developed an innovative technique using a heavy metal coin circled against the inside of a circular tin New Year's Eve noisemaker with the top removed, requiring numerous takes to achieve the desired sound.[7] While the final film combined Lyle's recording with additional work by foley artist Gary Hecker, Lyle's original performance formed the foundation for the distinctive sound effect.[8]

Battlestar Galactica

edit source

Lyle served as a foley artist on the Battlestar Galactica Miniseries in 2003, working alongside fellow foley artist Doug Madick as part of the sound editing team led by supervising sound editor Jack Levy.[9] The miniseries' sound editing work received a nomination for the 2004 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special, recognizing the contributions of the entire sound team including Lyle's foley work for Night 2 of the broadcast.[9]

The miniseries also won the 2004 Online Film & Television Association (OFTA) Television Award for Best Sound in a Motion Picture or Miniseries, with Lyle cited among the honored sound team members.[10]

Awards and Recognition

edit source

In 2004, Lyle won both the Primetime Emmy Award and the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) Golden Reel Award for Outstanding Sound Editing for his foley work on the HBO production And Starring Pancho Villa As Himself.[11][12] This recognition brought rare mainstream attention to the typically behind-the-scenes craft of foley artistry.[13]

Lyle subsequently won another Golden Reel Award for his foley work on House M.D. in 2010, as part of the team recognized for the episode "Epic Fail."[14] Throughout his career, he has received numerous additional award nominations for his contributions to sound editing.[15]

According to the Television Academy, Lyle has been nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards and has won two Emmys during his career.[16]

Lyle is married to Heather Lyle, a renowned voice teacher, vocologist, and music educator who founded the Vocal Yoga Method.[18] Together they lead the eight-member jazz band The BlueCat Express, which features Heather as vocalist. The band released a CD titled Spirit of New Orleans.[19]

The couple has resided in the Marquez Knolls area of Pacific Palisades, California since 1993.[20] They share their home with two cats named Vangie and Gabby.[21]

In addition to his professional work, Lyle is active in education, frequently lecturing at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television about sound design and the filmmaking process.[22] When not working, he pursues his passion for music and travels with his wife.[23]
