Battlestar Wiki:Think Tank/Separate continuity

From Battlestar Wiki, the free, open content Battlestar Galactica encyclopedia and episode guide
Revision as of 13:54, 23 October 2006 by Spencerian (talk | contribs) (Archiving successful proposal)
This is an archive successful proposal that was vetted through the Think Tank, a place where ideas of all kinds are proposed and worked upon by the community prior to implementation. Please do not modify this proposal.

As more and more official material appears that doesn't fit in the canonical world of the Battlestar Galactica series, it's important to be able to add the data here in Battlestar Wiki, but continue to mark the articles with a distinct origin and difference from canonical content. Comic books, video games and novels are likely problems. Therefore, the need for a policy of separate continuity is needed. Separate continuity allows inclusion of this content without damaging of canonical continuities. This policy is NOT designed to allow fan fiction.

Battlestar Wiki:Separate continuity

Purpose: To define officially-licensed stories and content from canonical, aired content through a formal policy.

  • What is the benefit of this proposal to the wiki?

This policy would aid in keeping non-canonical official information from cluttering the consistencies of the aired episodes.

  • What is involved in implementing this idea?

Very little; in fact, the {{separate continuity}} template is already in place to add to any article. The article is auto-categorized when this is used.

  • Who is going to do it?

Any contributor can mark an article in this manner.

  • Why should we do it at all?

As an example: While officially licensed information, the Battlestar Galactica 0 comic shows inconsistent information to that which has aired, but still contains content that is relevant in its own universe. We have and will encounter this problem with novels from both Original and Re-imagined Series.

  • How will we use the idea?

Same as we use to define fan fiction, only we don't eliminate the conflicting data, but reclassify it.

  • Should the proposal pass, when will work start on this idea?

Odds are, several contributors already have. This is a formality to produce a policy page for this need so that detailed information on the policy can be defined and its enforcement can be managed.

  • Where will this idea be implemented? (e.g. Will it be on certain types of pages or the entire Wiki in general?)

It's already in place on articles such as Video Game-related articles using the template, but there's the need for a policy, so this TT item is in place to approve the formal policy.
