Louanne "Kat" Katraine is a young woman with some flying experience. She was selected as a candidate pilot ("nugget") for Viper training under the command of Lieutenant Kara "Starbuck" Thrace. ("Act of Contrition") While she may still be a new pilot, she has a taste for fighting, and is often on the front lines when the Galactica engages Cylon forces.
Biography[edit]
Kat is a young woman in her early 20's, and survivor of the Cylon Attack she is selected from relative obscurity to become one of the Galactica's first intake of trainee pilots after 7 experienced pilots are killed in freak accident (Act of Contrition).
Described as a "boonie jumper", she is placed under the command of Kara Thrace for training, alongside nugget pilots Constanza and Perry, with whom she forms a friendship.
Thrown in at the deep end - flying Vipers on their very first day of training, none of the nuggets performs particularly well - Kat in particular failing to make a combat landing on Galactica. This leads to the entire intake initially being washed out by Thrace, prior to being reinstated on the orders of Commander William Adama.
Kat's training continues until she is selected to fly with Lee Adama during a raid to secure tylium desposits from the Cylons (The Hand of God).
She also participated in the defense of Galactica when the battlestar was attempting to relocate the Fleet. ("Scattered")
Kat was almost killed in a Viper training exercise when a newly appointed CAG, Captain Birch, incorrectly directed her to attack an asteroid target as Hot Dog fired a missile at the torget. Kat's piloting skills saved her from a dangerous collision with debris (Home).
Kat became increasingly exhausted due to the mounting pressures of service in the Fleet with long hours, constant danger, and no possiblity of reinforcement. While trying to combate her fatigue, Kat became dependent on Stims. Following this she became emotionally unstable; mooning a documentary crew for her "buddies" on Freighter 212, berating Chief Tyrol for mechanical failures that were beyond his control, and finally crashing her Viper into the flight deck ("Final Cut"). (Kat shouted "Hi, Mom!" while waving into the camera, but she may not have meant it literally.)
Kat apparently has been promoted from cadet to the rank of Lieutenant ("Final Cut").
