According to a scene cut from the episode "Valley of Darkness, Brenik was a colonial ship which was boarded by Cylon forces during the second year of the war. It was apparently a small vessel, with a crew of approximately 75, only 20 of whom survived the attack. Then-Petty Officer Saul Tigh was among the survivors, at that time a teenager serving as gunner's mate.
He recounted that the Cylon boarding party engaged his crew in hand-to-hand combat in a battle over the ship's ammunition magazines. By the end of the war, they would abandon this tactic in favor of venting a ship's atmosphere and turning its guns against its allies.
The loss of Brenik was apparently an infamous Colonial defeat, as years later when Tigh told Adama he served on the ship Adama instantly new its fate.
