Buzzword Term

Meaning: Being officially recognised as a part of the stated history of a fictional television or film series.

Example: It is recognised as canon that James Kirk commanded the starship Enterprise.

The term is used to distinguish those "facts" about and within a television series that are accepted against those that are hypothesised by fans and / or the result of fictionalised novels and other spin-offs that may not be recognised by the original creators (for example, there have been a great many novels written about "Star Trek" protraying various adventures of the characters. None of these novels are regarded as "canon" within the Star Trek universe).
