Biography

edit

Early Life and Education

edit

Soares was raised in Richmond, British Columbia, where she attended Palmer and Steveston secondary schools.[1] She was involved in band and choir during her youth, but did not begin acting until late in high school when she participated in the yearly school show.[2] As a teenager, she also became involved in community theatre, borrowing her father's car to perform in shows in New Westminster and Burnaby.[1]

After graduating from high school, Soares attended the University of British Columbia (UBC), initially intending to pursue a practical degree rather than theatre.[3] She began as a French major while taking theatre electives, and by the end of her undergraduate studies had completed a double major in theatre and French.[4]

Following her undergraduate degree, Soares attended Studio 58, a professional theatre training program at Langara College in Vancouver.[5] She appreciated the program's strong connections to Vancouver's professional theatre community, noting that directors and artistic directors working in the field taught at the school, allowing students to build professional networks before graduation.[6] By the time she graduated from Studio 58, Soares had already secured her first professional booking.[7]

Career

edit

Theatre

edit

Soares has built an extensive theatre career in Vancouver and across Canada. She has been particularly associated with Theatre Replacement, working with co-founder and artistic director Maiko Yamamoto, who has been instrumental in developing Soares as an artist.[8]

Her theatre credits include productions of Kuroko (vAct), China Doll (Gateway Theatre), Nassim (Bush Theatre), four runs of Salmon Girl in British Columbia and Ontario (Raven Spirit Dance), The Enemy (Firehall Arts Centre), and King of the Yees (Gateway Theatre and a tour to the National Arts Centre).[9] She also performed in The Drowning Girls at Vertigo Theatre, earning a Betty Mitchell Award nomination for Ensemble Performance.[10]

Other notable productions include Half Life (Theatre NorthWest), Green Lake (Solo Collective – Jessie nomination for Supporting Actress), Benefit (Downstage), Cock (Rumble), and Cinderella: An East Van Panto (Theatre Replacement).[11] Soares has identified Cock, a three-person play with no props that required her to perform with an English accent, as particularly memorable and challenging.[12] She noted that the role was significant as it represented a shift in the industry, with casting directors beginning to hire performers who looked like her for roles previously unavailable to them.[13]

At the Shaw Festival, Soares appeared in Snow in Midsummer, The Orphan of Chao, Village Wooing, Blithe Spirit, Everybody, Too True To Be Good, Sherlock Holmes and The Raven's Curse, Shawground (2021), and Fairground (2021).[14]

Like many theatre performers, Soares has supplemented her acting income with other work. She has worked at several Richmond community centres to maintain financial stability while pursuing her theatrical career.[15]

Television and Film

edit

Soares has appeared in numerous television series, often in recurring or guest-starring roles. Her television credits include Riverdale, The Flash (as Judge Tanaka), The Baby-Sitters Club, Supernatural, The Magicians, and Virgin River (as ER Doc #1).[16]

She appeared in three episodes of Stargate Atlantis as Dr. Coleman in "Tao of Rodney," "Submersion," and "First Strike," appearing alongside Battlestar Galactica actors Leela Savasta and Heather Doerksen. She also appeared in an episode of The 4400 titled "The New World" as an NTAC Medical Nurse,[17] working with Battlestar Galactica actors Samantha Ferris and Kavan Smith.

Additional television credits include Arrow, Timeless (as Military Doctor), Psych (as Officer), Once Upon a Time, Mistresses, Witches of East End, Continuum, Smallville, and The Andromeda Strain (as Korean Nurse).[18]

Battlestar Galactica

edit

Soares portrayed the Gemenon Delegate (credited as "Speaking Delegate #1") in five episodes of the Re-imagined Series during Season 4.[19] Her character served as the representative from Gemenon on the Quorum of Twelve following the Second Exodus.
