I was born in 1959, so I was 19 when the original series went on the air, but I didn't have any interest in it, although I saw the occasional episode when my father and brother, who did like it, were watching. I recall "Greetings From Earth".
I didn't get into it until 1982, when I got my first TV set and would watch reruns of it on Sunday afternoons on KVOS-TV from Bellingham. That's when I did get interested in it. Actually, I think I listened to episodes for two months before I bought the TV, since I had cable and hooked it up to my clock radio, which had VHF TV reception capability.
I had wished for so many years that Glenn Larson would have the chance to produce a concluding miniseries (which I originally would not disregard Galactica 1980) where a Cylon attack on Earth forces the Galactica to act, while at the same time giving them the opening they need to reveal themselves to Earth. Right now, I'm trying to write my own personal version on a variation of that, but disregarding Galactica 1980 in this version. I'm incorporating elements from the reimagined series, such as personal names, but I'm also including an FTL jump capability in the Galactica only that had never been used because no other ship in the fleet had the capability, and because the 12 Colonies were in a very dense star cluster until the episode "The Hand of God", and now are in relatively empty space. But the story is only for my personal enjoyment; I have no plans to publish it.
Speaking of the reimagined series: beautiful effects, beautiful sets, beautiful models, and I like the FTL aspect that allows them to realistically get from star to star. The idea of Cylon humanoids infiltrating is interesting. Recasting Baltar as an innocent dupe instead of a power-mad privileged citizen was creative.
BUT... I do not like the explicit implication of Starbuck's old expletive as being the English language's infamous F-word. And I don't like the explicit depiction of so many sexual behaviours. Thus, I have watched almost none of the new series. I am disappointed that Ronald Moore, who brought us Star Trek series in the 1990s, lowered the bar and made the new Galactica nothing suitable for a family to watch.
I also didn't care to see that the Colonials also made the mistake of putting women on high-heeled shoes. I've already registered my opinion on the waste of paper by cutting corners (some 3-6 percent of the paper, depending on the size of the page and the size of the corners cut off). And a society that can build huge starships should also be capable of somewhat more advanced civilian technology than what is shown... they could have tried for mid to late 21st century type civilization, while taking precautions, but after 40 years, they might be lowering their guard on the Cylons.
