The '''time warp synthesizer''' is a device created by [[Doctor Zee]] to permit travel back and forth through time, which is considered by the Colonials to be the fourth dimension.

The device, apparently small enough to be installed in a Colonial [[Viper (1980)|Viper]], works on the principle that once a person exceeds the [[w:speed of light|speed of light]], one can travel back in time. [[Jamie Hamilton]] equates this to [[w:Albert Einstein|Albert Einstein]]'s [[w:special theory of relativity|special theory of relativity]], which [[Troy (1980)|Troy]] confirms is correct.

As a result of going through time, the molecules of the synthetic fibers change color due to magnetic stress loads, thus the [[uniforms (TOS)|uniforms]] and accoutrements worn by time travelers are turned white. This includes the helmet and other equipment on a person, however the ships themselves (nor the hair, eyes or skin) retain their original coloring. Upon returning to their original time frame, the whitening effect is removed and the white-washed items revert to their original coloring.

Travel through time is easily detectable, as their "scanners followed Xaviar's trail as clearly as if he'd simply walked across a meadow," according to Troy {{G80|Galactica Discovers Earth, Part II}}.

== Usage ==

[[Xaviar]] proposes using the invention in order to advance [[Earth (1980)|Earth]]'s development from the past, despite the fact that it has never been tested, nor do the Colonials know what side effects of time manpiulation will occur. He later does this against the wishes of the Council, which forces [[Adama (1980)|Adama]] to recall [[Troy (1980)|Troy]] and [[Dillon]], so they may pursue Xaviar back to 1944 and stop him from giving the Germans advanced technology {{G80|Galactica Discovers Earth, Part II}}.

Xaviar continues his attempts, including an incursion into Revolutionary War-era America, but is thwarted {{G80|Galactica Discovers Earth, Part II}}. Use of the time warp synthesizer is abandoned for a time, with Xaviar attempting to secure his freedom from Adama and the Council by using the [[Super Scouts]] as bait, which fails {{G80|Spaceball}}.

An unproduced script entitled "[[The Day They Kidnapped Cleopatra]]" made use of the synthesizer. 

== Novelization depiction ==

In the [[Galactica Discovers Earth (Book)|novelization]] by [[Michael Resnick]], the synthesizer allows a ship or object to be moved out of normal space-time through a passage and into a universe of "non-causality". This "non-causality" universe is a realm without rhyme or reason: for instance, lights have no pattern and sounds have no source. 

As a result, those people who are not properly conditioned for travel in the "non-causality" universe tend to pass out in order to maintain a semblance of sanity.
