Before that, he co-starred in the legal drama ''[[w:The Defenders (1961 TV Series)|The Defenders]]'' with E.G. Marshall from 1961 to 1965.    He had also had a recurring role on the detective series ''[[w:Mannix|Mannix]]''as Lieutenant Adam Tobias, which he continued to do several times a year even when he was starring on the ''Brady Bunch''.   He received Emmy nominations for his roles in the miniseries' ''Roots'' and ''Rich Man, Poor Man''.
 
Reed guest starred as [[Donald Mortinson]] in the ''[[Galactica 1980]]'' series premiere, "[[Galactica Discovers Earth, Part I]]".

Reed died from complications of colorectal cancer at the age of 59.
