Refinery ships process raw minerals and metals gathered by a mining ship. Unlike a mining ship, a refinery vessel has large processing and storage facilities, and can serve as a fueling vessel. In the storage compartments small excavators and chutes are used to move the raw, granular tylium to long conveyor belts on the lower decks. There manual labor is involved in refining it to a liquid fuel, but the exact further process is unknown.

Refinery ships are vessels used for refining tylium that have been used in the colonies since at least as far back as the First Cylon War. During the war, they presumably had the role of replenishing the fuel reserves of Colonial Fleet ships Blood and Chrome.
The Fleet possesses two such ships, the Daru Mozu (Epiphanies) and the Hitei Kan (Dirty Hands). However, the episode "Dirty Hands" implies that the former was destroyed.

Over forty years later the class is used for civilian purposes. At least two of these ships, Daru Mozu and Hitei Kan, are able to escape with Galactica following the Fall of the Twelve Colonies Miniseries. During the refugee fleet's ongoing escape from Cylon forces, these ships refine tylium mined by the vessels Monarch and Majahual.
Appearances
After the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, a refinery ship is found by Boomer's recon Raptor and brought to Roslin's amassing civilian fleet (Miniseries).

Ships
The vessels are used to process the immense reserves of tylium mined from an asteroid liberated from a Cylon base (The Hand of God).

Following President Roslin's imprisonment and Colonel Tigh's subsequent declaration of martial law, the crew of one refinery ship refuses to continue refining tylium in protest (Resistance).

One of the refinery ships is damaged in a collision with the Striker under the incompetent oversight of recently promoted Captain George Birch, Galacticas CAG in Lee Adama's absence (Home, Part I).

A refinery ship is among the ships taking part in the settlement of New Caprica (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II) and later escapes during the Battle of New Caprica (Exodus, Part II)
