The ship becomes the center of a crisis when an outbreak of [[Parahelial Fever]] occurs among the 42 children aboard. Due to the danger to adults, its regular crew is evacuated and a new, immune crew led by Captain [[Apollo (TOS-LM)|Apollo]] is brought aboard. The ship's only armament is a single, outdated Mark Three [[impulse beam]].

During a Cylon attack, ''Orestes'' is severely damaged, losing its controls and communications, and is left adrift. It is presumed destroyed by the Fleet but has actually drifted towards a Cylon mothership.
